  1. I read Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, and I think Mitch chose to write this book in Morrie's memory. Morrie was Mitches old college professor. One day Mitch was watching Nightline and saw Morrie on TV and realized he was dying from ALS. Mitch immediately went to Morrie's home. For the next 14 Tuesdays, they met up and talked about life. Things like forgiveness, culture, money. The lesson this book taught me was to not take things for granted and its never to late to start something. Mitch didn't talk to Morrie for 20 years after he graduated and he promised to stay in touch. He never did stay in touch and soon found out he only had 14 more weeks left of Morrie. But he knew it was never to late to start seeing Morrie and he did just that.

    1. Hi Jayden!

I totally agree with you! I thought the same thing about Tuesdays with Morrie. I think Mitch really wanted to write this book about Morrie so his memory would never be forgotten. I think Morrie stated a few times that not being remembered or not making an impact on people after he died was one of his biggest fears. I think Mitch did an awesome job of relaying on his message and he certainly will not be forgotten anytime soon.

    2. I read the book Night, and I think our themes can connect in the "never taking things for granted" aspect. Throughout my book, the main character forgot what a full stomach felt like, or a hot shower. Even the little things that we take for granted on the daily.

  2. I read the book "Three Good Things", by Lois Peterson. I believe the theme of this book would be friendship. The author puts Leni in a rough situation with her mom and they both have struggles throughout the book. Then Jake comes into in the picture and steps up to be a friend to Leni. He invites her over for supper with his family and hangs out with him throughout the book. Leni also opened up to him about her situation and how they do not really have a home and keep moving. Jake offers to help by asking of she wants to come to school with him. When Jake and Leni had to go their sperate ways they were both very sad. They gave each others hugs and I could tell they were going to miss each other. This book did a great job of showing friendship and how friendship should be. I think the lesson the author wanted the reader to learn would be count your blessings with your loved ones. I think this because Leni and Jake really did love each other and when they had to separate it was horrible. So never take your friends for granted.

My book has a minor theme of friendship. Sam and Ian become friends at the end of the book when Sam's stalker is after her. Ian throughout the book gives Sam hints that there is someone after her and when he is coming for her, Ian does everything in his power to save Sam.

  3. In the book "Night" there could be many takeaways that the readers might pull from the story. However, the main one that stuck out to me was to be thankful for what our world has become. Even though sometimes our world is still portrayed as being bad, we have come along way since the holocaust. None of us truly know what hunger is, and certainly don't know what it feels like to be treated like you don't exist. I think the author wrote this to get his story out there, maybe even get it off of his chest. I also believe that he did this so that history never repeats itself. Something like the holocaust should never happen again, and those that are able to voice their experiences help ensure that. The overall lesson that the author intended to get across was that someone always has it worse than you, which is quite obvious in the book.

Thanks for sharing your view point on the story. I read the same book but I did not really think about that one of the messages is to be thankful for the freedoms that we have. That is major point that Elie was trying to get across to us and not to take anything for granted.

  4. I read the book "The Game of Life" and i believe possible themes or reasons why he wrote this book is to have patience and determination. I believe that these are possible ones because my book is about a boy is has autism but loves the game of basketball and will do anything for his team to win. Throughout this book, the theme patience is seen as you have to give things time in order for them to work out. For my character his was waiting to get into a high school game and play in a real game and he did it. The Determination comes from having obstacles in your way but never giving up when others say you cannot do something. His was that he continued to push himself for basketball even though he had autism and the coach did not know if he would be able to play but that did not stop him.

Your book does sound very inspiring. I agree with what Jayden said, in how your book could relate to Morrie. Morrie in the end was just fighting for one more tuesday. In your case the main character was fighting for a chance in the real game.

    4. Hey Dylan,

  5. I am reading the book "This Is How I Lied" and there are many themes that are shown throughout the book, and i think there are many reasons for the purpose of this book. I think the main theme though is acceptance. In the book it flashes from the years 1995 and 2020. In these times it shows 15 year old and them today and how the whole time they are wanted to be accepted. The character that faces this the most is Eve... the one who was murdered. She struggles with acceptance because of her mom, boyfriend, and the whole town which ultimately leads to her murder. I think the author wrote this book to share that even in a small town like Iowa murders do happen more than what people think. Also you need to trust yourself before you trust others.

    3. Hi Vada!
I think acceptance is a very important theme for any book because usually that means there is going to be a lesson. It is important to accept everyone because you do not want others to feel left out. I also think you should always trust yourself before others, because you want to take care of yourself first before anyone else. You always want to make sure you are okay.

    4. Hi Vada,
I also think one of the themes in my book is acceptance. Oskar's dad died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks and he is trying to cope with it. Acceptance is something that Oskar did throughout the book to cope with the loss of his dad. I think that acceptance is a big thing that children our age need to learn and read about, and I am happy that both of our authors chose this as their theme.

  6. I read the book The Combination by Elias Carr. There doesn't really seem to be a theme about the book. It just starts out as your average beginning to a school year. Then spirals out of control... FAST. There are bats all over the place, kids getting locked in their lockers, it's a mess. You'd have to read it for yourself to find a theme. What I could at least take away is bravery. Persevere through the tough times, even when all hope is lost.

  7. I am reading the book "Dead Lake" by Darcy Coates. I think the biggest theme of this book is to trust your instincts. When Sam first gets to her uncle's cabin she gets a weird feeling that someone is watching her even though the nearest house is miles away. The next day she sees a strange figure on the dock and then she starts panting pictures of a man she has never seen before in her sleep. Later in the book she finds out that she is being stalked by the man that she has been painting in her sleep. There are many other times when Sam feels like something is off and it saves her. I think the author wrote the book to say that if something feels wrong or off then more than likely, something is off.

  8. In the book "Forever and Always Lara Jean, I think the author Jenny Han's purpose for writing the book was to target younger readers and portray what love feels like. There were so many times in the book where the author's text made me feel like I was in the story not only because I can relate being a senior in high school but because of the family moments. Yes this is mostly a story about to teenagers who are in love and are soon having to face long distance, but it also has many special family moments. Because I am extremely close to my family I was able to take away that family is forever. In this book the mother had passed away many years ago and the father of the story is remarrying. The daughters have a hard time with excepting someone new into there homes but they know that it will help build a strong relationship within the family.

I would say the lesson in this book is to not wait forever to do the things you to do in life. because the one of main characters in the book spent most of his time inside his house and not going to explore or do any of the things he wanted to do. so during his last day he spent it doing all the things his normal self wouldn't, and towards the end he tells his friends all the things he wish he could still do and how he wanted to be able to spend more time with him.

  10. I am reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel. There could be many possible themes you can get from the novel but the one that sticks out to me is enjoying the little things in life. Over the course of the novel the main character forgets what a home cooked meal is and even a warm shower. Most of us will never have to deal with being hungry or having just the basic necessities covered. It makes me learn the lesson of enjoying things in my life that I took for granted because the people in the holocaust suffered horribly. It always shows that our world has come a long way and I hope another Holocaust happens again.

  13. My book is Sorry Not Sorry by Sophie Ranald, and it was kind of a drama chick book. With that being said, I think the purpose was for younger girls to read and relate to the fake friends/ bad relationships. The author took us along the ride of a girls life and her ups and downs with friendships, relationships, work, and just life in general. leading me to think she was trying to get the point across that even though we all live different lives we all have similar things that we go through and it is completely normal. of course with a little interesting drama twists along the way to spice up the story and make it a lot more interesting and fun to read. I am glad to have chose the book I was recommended in the end.

  19. I am reading the book “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” by Jonathan Foer. I believe Foer’s purpose/theme for writing this book is to show how the impact 9/11 has had on people and also how they cope with tragedy. In the book, it shows the main character, Oskar, struggling with terror because his recently deceased dad was the person who made him feel safe and secure. Oskar’s grandma also was struggling to reconnect with her estranged husband after he had left her years prior. I think that Foer chose to put that in his storyline to show readers how the characters dealt with their personal tragedies and that everyone has been affected by the 9/11 terrorist attacks. When Oskar was searching for people with the last name “Black” he encountered a woman who answers Agnes Black’s door. They learn that Agnes had been a waitress at the windows at the World Restaurant in the World Trade Center, and she died on 9/11. It comes to show that so many people around New York had a connection with the World Trade Center. I think that the author did a very good job at displaying Oskar coping with his father passing by gaining new friends and finding out about his family more. I think the lesson in the book was to strive until you succeed. Oskar never gave up looking for what the key unlocked that he found in his father's closet, and he went through so many struggles along the way to help him achieve this goal. Also, Oskar’s grandma was not going to give up on her ex-husband Thomas. After he came back from leaving her years ago, she kept him a secret and made sure that he was never going to leave her again. After reading this book, it has made me thankful for the things I have and to never take anything for granted.

The major reason for Elie writing this story is to show how bad the concentration and work camps really were and it was not just because of the physical labor. I got to see first hand how all the tragic events affected Elie's mental health and that is not a point of view that is shared very much about the holocaust. The other major reason for Elie sharing his story is to make sure something like this will never happen again. He talked about how at the end of it, he did not even feel like a person anymore because of how he was treated and he was one of the lucky one to come out alive. People fought day in and day out to survive and most of the time they would not have a choice either way.

    1. Night talks about some very serious topics that think most people should be educated on. The author does a really good job showing it from his point of view.

  22. I read the book Dear Evan Hansen and i think the author was trying to bring awareness to some serious topics that people deal with everyday in today's world. The first one being anxiety. Mental health is something that is talked about a lot more today than it ever was before, but there is still a nasty stigma around it. Reading this book really puts you in the shoes of someone with anxiety and helps you see exactly how they see things. It also talks about suicide which is a sad but important topic. I think the author wrote the book to show that everyone is fighting their own battles. You never know what someone is going through, like Evan. He's so socially anxious and no one understands him. And even Connor. No one would have guessed he would get that low. It just goes to show that you never truly know what's going on in someone's head

  23. I have just finished reading the book P.S. I Still Love You and I believe 2 possible themes would be to have trust and to forgive. Throughout the entire book there was drama involving Lara Jean and her ex best friend/her boyfriend's ex. She thinks that Gen, the ex, is trying to take Peter from her, but in reality, she is going to Peter for advice about her parents divorce. Peter has told Lara Jean from day 1 that she should trust him because nothing is going on. However, Lara Jean didn't listen and they end up breaking up because of it. This leads to Lara Jean and Gen meeting up so Lara Jean can hear her side of the story and then forgive her and make up. In the end Lara Jean ended up forgiving Peter and Gen, and gaining trust for Peter.

Oh my god I have always been fan of romantic books and P.S. I Still Love You is one of them it has the very similar theme to my book too because the Lara Jean's ex comes come she has the guilty and confession to make but her present was stopping her just like my book when Mitch has the confession to make that he will miss him after the graduation and that he should have cried that day or at least give him a hug.

  24. In My book extremely loud and incredibly close I didn't really pick up on a theme that doesn't mean that I didn't learn any lessons from the book though Oskar thought many life lesson that even though your going through a lot like some people in 9/11 that maybe had someone in the hospital he lost his dad that was a role model and not only that his best friend. also what I learned is that even though may feel like you have nobody to help you through a rough time there's plenty of people out there and Oskar may have met people in a weird way by knocking on Radom peoples door he found some people to help him cope with the loss of his dad.

    1. Hi Trent,
I read Tuesday with Morrie and at a young age Morrie lost his mother to an unnamed illness. when Morrie was growing up his dad wanted him to work probably to get his mind off things and he grew up teaching lessons and making peace with everyone.

  25. In my book Every Last Word I feel like the lesson was that everyone has their own thing thing they are going through that no one else knows about. In my book the main character Sam had OCD and she fought it in her head but no one else knew about it. She also had anxiety and panic attacks and when she had them no one knew because she hid them and never let anyone see her break down.

  26. In my book public enemy number two, I feel like the lesson of this book was to teach us that you should just keep going because it will all work out in the end. I think the authors purpose was just to entertain anyone who was to read the book.

  27. In Michael Vey i don't think there even was a theme or something to learn from it because at the start of the book someone took his mom and girlfriend and said nothing about it. But if i had to squeeze something out of this book it would probably be something like this. Chase after what you want and if at first you fail, plan it again and start over. because at the end of the book he goes all throughout the building looking for his mom and she isn't there, she never was.

    1. Hi Cole,
I read Tuesday with Morrie and the theme is kind of similar. Morrie always said to make peace and try new things and not to worry about life so much. Morrie also taught many more life lessons.

  28. I really enjoyed Moneyball because it shows many different perspectives when it comes to pro baseball and how it’s changing. And it teaches you even more about the sport even if you all ready knew about it. And it has opened my mind up about the game of baseball seeing how difficult it is to be a player but to own a team when you don't have a lot of money to use.

  29. The final book that I chose to read this year for English 4B was Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. In Tuesdays with Morrie there are many different things that the author tries to get across to his readers. One of the biggest/most important is to always be thankful for what you have. Life can take a drastic turn and go downhill like it did for Morrie. Do not take it for granted and be appreciative of it every day. One of the reasons why I think Mitch Albom chose to write this book is to carry on Morrie’s legacy. Throughout the book many times I can recall Morrie stating that one of his biggest fears is people not remembering him after he dies. He wanted to make an impact on people so that his legacy would continue to live on through them even though he was not alive. I think Mitch was able to do just that with how amazing of a book he wrote.

  30. In my book "Code of Silence " its about three kids witnessing a burglar and the owner of a diner getting beaten to death. i think the reason why he is sharing this story is he probably went through this as a kid or probably knew someone that went through this situation. The lesson he is teaching me is talking about telling the truth or keeping the truth because the three characters in my book know information that is powerful but they can't tell someone because they have been threaten by they think a Police officer. i feel like these kind of truths are the kind that gets people killed because if they tell someone, they are dead, if they don't tell anyone, their dead and I think the lesson he is teaching me is that find someone that you can trust or someone that can protect you when you a information that is powerful.

  31. In my book Night I feel like the theme that stuck out to me the most was never take anything for granted. I pulled this out because all the Jews were living a simple life like the rest of us until within weeks everything got taken away by the Germans. None of us will know how bad they had to go through things and I'm thankful we don't have that anymore because its awful to not be treated like a person. I think the author wrote this story to talk about his experiences in the Holocaust and help us envision it more. The overall lesson in the book is be grateful for what you have because someone always has it worse.

I hope you have enjoyed reading the rest of your book. I also am reading about Jewish people during the Holocaust, and a theme I also saw was not taking things for granted. I enjoyed reading what you have written here.

  32. I am reading the book Nerve by Jeanne Ryan. I think the theme throughout this book is confidence. Each character has to have confidence to do dares that are dangerous or risky. Vee steps out of her comfort zone by joining the game and ends up loving it. I think the author's purpose was to prove that stepping out of your comfort zone is a good thing and you should be confident in everything you do.

  33. I read the book Tuesdays With Morrie. In my opinion, Mitch had a few different purposes in writing Tuesdays With Morrie. First, he wished to reconnect with a man he admired and respected. Second, he and Morrie both wished to share Morrie's thoughts, experiences, and the lessons he'd learned.- Maci Steffen

  34. I am reading the book Sarah's Key. In this book, I think one of the main themes is overcoming guilt and grief. There are many key points in the book that show this, such as when Sarah felt guilty for her brothers death and the reason her friend Lucy who she met in the camp may have also died. She was unfortunately the one who found her brother dead locked in the cupboard, so seeing that he was truly dead and not just a mystery of what may have happened to him did not help alleviate her grief. In the other parts of the story with Julia, she had to overcome many struggles with her and Bertrand, and the abortion she was planning on having but didn't.

  35. I read Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, this book has really good life lessons that will make you think about your own day to day schedule and yes this lessons while leave you good impact on life and what life has to offer. Mitch the author of my book, he has try to portrayed his old college professor's expect on his life, by living in the moment with no regrets behind. Their are so many takeaways like Morrie's sharing lessons about life or talking things out. The purpose that Mitch might have through while writing this book in the memory of Morrie and his takeaways also last but not least to tell us that it never a bad idea to visit your love ones ones in while.

  36. In my book Tuesdays with Morrie mitch was a student of Morrie's in college and they wanted to keep in touch after school but never for about 20 years. mitch saw Morrie on the Nightline show and he saw that Morrie was dying from ALS. So, mitch went to Morrie's home and wanted to talk to him, little did he know that he only had 14 Tuesdays to talk about the last 20 years and life lessons. I feel that mitch wrote this book for a memory of Morrie, but also to share with other people how great of a person Morrie really was.

  37. My book is The Sea of Monsters. I feel like the purpose of this book was to tell you do the right thing even if you break the law in the process and never give up on anything even if it looks horrible. I say this because Percy went on a quest that was not assigned to him which would have gotten him in a lot of trouble and never be able to go into any half blood camp ever again another words will die from a monster in his sleep. But if he did not go on this quest Kronos would have come back and killed everything in his true form. In the end it all worked out and camp half blood was saved once again.

  39. I read the book Where She Went. I think that the authors purpose to this book was to answer any questions from the first book. Not only does she answer questions from the first book she gives more background about Adam. In the first book the readers learn more about Mia and her background. During the crash in the first book she describes the crash and relates it to her life before. Now in the second book it being from Adam's point of view the readers learn what was going through his head during the crash.

  40. I read the book The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks. I think the authors purpose of this book was to inform readers that not everyone's life is going to be perfect and they are going to face struggles at some point in their life. He did a good job explaining the challenges that kids and parents are going to face. This book is dealing with teenagers and that's good because most parent-child stuggles start happen.

  45. Enola Gay is a biography of various people who were affected by the Atomic bombs. The Authors purpose for writing this book isnt always known. to me, it seems like the Authors want to bring light to the dropping of the bombs, and why it had to happen. the authors purpose for writing the book is to bring light and release more info on the topic of the atomic bombs, and just how much work and secrecy was put into the mission.

  46. I read the Book "The Trials of Apollo: The Hidden Oracle" by Rick RIordian. In this book the authors purpose is shown in his theme. The theme of the book is that you are not invincible and it is okay to be human. The author shows this by showing Apollos weaknesses and having characters remind him it's okay to make mistakes, hes human.

  47. In my book A Lesson Before Dying by Earnest J. Gaines, the story was very purpose/message driven. I think the main theme was we are judged based on how we react to situations. the character Jefferson in my book was falsely accused of murder and sentenced to death. when Jefferson walked to the electric chair he stood very tall, defying the way everyone thought of him previously. now obviously this situation is pretty extreme but it was a good way to get the pointy across.
