In all five novels, the main character or characters face adversity in one way or another. Choose on of the main characters in your book. Describe how you view the character's challenges in your book, and talk about how your character handles the hardships and struggles. If you were in your main character's situation, how would you handle yourself? What would you do?
I think that Ishmael (the main character in A Long Way Gone) and his Brother Junior, and his friend Talloi, have gone thought a lot of adversity. When they were told about Rebels were attacking his home village and Ishmael, Junior, and Talloi wanted and tried to go back to find there families, but after they seen some of the people who were coming from their village and what they looked like and the blood from some of them being shot, they knew that they had no chance in finding them without dying. But when the book continued they still wanted to try to find them.
ReplyDeleteHi Liam!
DeleteI am reading the book night and that reminds me of the part in my book where the Jewish families are forced out of their homes in the ghettos and how families were separated during transports to the concentrations camps.
it sounds like you are getting alot from your book. our books sound similar in the way that they both deal with terrorists and they have many hardships throughout.
Deletei agree liam, Ishmeal, Junior, and Talloi have a lot to run from and a lot to look for. if i were in their position i would be very very confused and scared.
DeleteLiam,
DeleteIn the beginning of the book, you get one chapter before everything kinda just hits the fan. After they hear about their parents, they want to try to go find them, but they soon give up because it would be suicidal to try to go back. From there, their hardships just get more difficult
Hey Liam,
DeleteIt seems like the main character is going through a lot in this books as well as the character in my book is going through the same things.
Ishmael the main character of A Long Way Gone goes through struggles throughout the book, namely hunger, dehydration, loosing family and friends. as ishmael and his group hear about rebels attacking there village they go to return and are on the way when they see poeple coming from the way of there village covered in blood and injured. as the story progresses ishmael still continues to look for his parents and brother who he has lost. if i were in ishmaels situation i believe i may have given up long ago and begun to loose hope.
ReplyDeleteHi Chase!
DeleteI think if I were the main character in your book I would be torn what to do. I think I would continue to look for parents because I would not survive with out them. I do not think i could give up looking for my parents.
Kaylee Schueller
Chase i wouldve picked the same thing because ishmeal has been through alot more than the other boys and i would see why cause it shows more in ishmeals life than the others.
DeleteThe main character in my book Night goes through the same things. The rations of food in the concentration camps was very little so he was always hungry and dehydrated which would make him weak. Plus families were separated every day in these camps.
DeleteIf I was the main character in your book I would struggle to make decisions. He sounds like he is going through a lot and it kind of reminds me of my main character and her struggles.
Deletei doubt that i would lose hope so quickly, and in all honesty, if your hope of better life depletes that fast in a civil war, that u have the possibility of running from, you would be better off joining a side and just fighting back. i know that if my country was about to fall into a civil war, id defend it.
DeleteWhen Ishmael loses his brother, the author doesn't really say how it happens. He writes that they were lost in the chaos and that was the last time he saw his brother. This is a very abrupt ending to his brother's story. I would've thought that it would be more drawn out and he would at least try to look for his brother.
DeleteI agree because after seeing all the people arrive extremely injured I would assume the same fate happened to my parents I would try to find them but I would have given up long before he did.
DeleteBeing the main character in your book would be hard, so much is going on all at once. Especially loosing your parents and being attacked. My main character has different problems from your book.
Deletei agree i thought he would have looked for his brother but on the other hand if i were in that situation i would do everything i could to try and stay alive.
DeleteI feel like if I was in Ishmael's situation I feel like I would want to give up over and over again but I would probably keep looking and not give up.
DeleteIn the book "I am Malala", Malala goes through a lot of challenges that are extremely difficult. Malala's town is invaded with the Taliban, and the Taliban are not for girls going to school. Malala really wants to go to school and believes everyone has a right to their education. Which I completely agree with Malala because if you want to get educated, everyone should have access to do what they want. Malala handles these challenges by speaking out and doing interviews sharing her thoughts. She also still attends school, even though it is extremely dangerous and the Taliban say no girls should be at school. If I were Malala, I would not speak up about the situation because it would only bring more attention to me and then maybe the Taliban would see me. I would also not go to school for time being and lay low, because there is a chance of dying every time she leaves the house.
ReplyDeleteKaylee Schueller
Kaylee i forgot if this was the 1,2, or 3rd book on my list but i know i wanted to read it and it seems that my book and your book have the same story line with the taliban and everything but doesnt have the same thing that is happening in my book since everyone is running from them.
DeleteI also wanted to read this book, I feel like Malala and the main character in my book Mariam can really connect and have the same personalities toward things.
DeleteI am also reading Malala, and I agree that I wouldn't know what to do if I were not able to go to school and had to stay home unless I was out with a male relative.
DeleteI agree with you that I wouldn't do anything about the situation. Not only would I not want to bring attention to me, but I don't think much would change if I was the only person in my country standing up for this.
DeleteHi Kaylee
DeleteThe book I am reading is called A Long Way Gone in this book the main character and his fiends have raping and creating music that was so popular in the time. So my point is that our books are two different poles a part but still my characters and your author having the same struggle going on that they have to fight with the world to be free and and able to do what they want to be as themselves.
I am reading the book "The Kite Runner'" and the main character in this book is Amir. He is the son of a rich guy named Baba that is well known. In the book Amir faces some challenges but I feel like the way he deals with them is not the correct way and shows how he really is. He has his bestfriend , Hassan, who is a servant for their family and is very loyal to Amir. Amir is not so loyal to Hassan though. In a situation, Hassan was being bullied by 3 other dudes and Amir watched it all go down but did not go help Hassan. He said he was scared and that is why he did not help him. I feel like this was a bad part in being a friend because he should of have gone and help him. I would have gone and help him since he is the bestfriend and had been loyal. This made me lose respect for Amir. I hope he becomes better throughout the rest of the story.
ReplyDeletei agree dylan, amir isn't really a good friend because he didn't try to help his friend out durign the altercation. i too hope that he becomes a better friend throughout the story.
DeleteI agree, and I think that if Amir could go back and do it again, he would act a different way. I think this way because after the incident, Amir can't get his mind off of it; making it obvious that he regrets it.
DeleteHI Dylan, I completely agree with you and I think this kind of shows what kind of a person Amir really is. It shows that he cares more about himself than even a close friend. I hope some how this relationship is restored.
Deletei think mariam has the most hardships in the book right now. Her mom passed away when she was young and then when she was 5 she tried to take down her mothers decoration that she made and was the last thing they had of hers to remember her, she tried to take it down and she dropped it and it shattered. Then her grandma called her some mean words and made her cry. Also her father is practically never around so her grandma got basically left to raise her.
ReplyDeleteHi Cole!
DeleteMariam sounds like she has a lot of odds stacked against her. If I were in her situation I think I would end up bursting to my breaking point. Having my mom pass away at a young age would scar me for life because she is a big part of my life. Also, not having a father figure would suck as well. I am not sure how I would cope with her situation.
Kaylee Schueller
I am reading the same book and I agree that Mariam is going through the most in the book. I think she is handling it very well for the young age she is. Her father should step up especially after her moms passing.
DeleteHi Cole.
DeleteI agree with you that Mariam has gone through the most hardships. I think that the fact her father was never around was very hard for her. She had no person to rely on except her mom and that can be very tough for her at a young age.
I am reading the book A Thousand Splendid Suns and Mariam is a character who goes through a lot of challenges. One of the challenges is arranged marriages occur in Afghanistan. This is a problem because Mariam is worried that the husband she is given will not be a good choice. Sure enough, Rasheed is not the right choice. Rasheed tells him to cook for him and make sure the house is clean whenever he gets home. He also is abusive and has a short temper towards Mariam. Mariam does not do much to get out of this situation because it is a bad decision to get divorced in their culture. If I was Mariam, I would leave Rasheed and move as far away from home and start a new lifestyle. I would not be able to live in that situation for long.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. She just needs to leave and start a new life. Make a family and raise them the way she should have been raised not the way she was
DeleteIn my book Kite Runners the main character is also going through many challenges and is also going into an arranged marriage
Deletein my book along way gone ishmeal faces alot of challenges and has been through alot even when he had to watch at old man almost die and laugh at him he had to eat fruit that he didnt know if it would poison him and he got chased by varius people and animals and hehandles it by think of family events that happened like with the fruit he thought about his grandpa. if i was in his position i would probably go super far away in the opposite direction so i wouldnt have to deal with rebels i would probably also steal a dead mans shoes.
ReplyDeleteHe did have a really hard time in all the different issues he ran into but he held it together enough to keep pushing and get what needed to be done done.
DeleteYour books sound interesting. If I was in the main character shoes in your book I would look for shelter and avoid people because sometimes you cant trust them.
DeleteI am reading the book Night and the main character is the author Elie Wiesel. As a fifteen-year-old he went through so many life threatening challenges and saw horrific things everyday. Being a teenager he handled these things incredibly well. Having barely any food in these working/death concentration camps takes an extreme amount of strength. Part of me thinks that if I was in his place I would fight hard to stay alive, but with barely any food or sleep I am not sure how strong I would be. Probably not enough to live as long as Elie did.
ReplyDeleteYour book sounds really good, I think I am going to read this for my choice book. It sounds like your book has a lot of different viewpoints.
DeleteHey Sara,
DeleteI totally agree with you, I definitely would not make it as long as Elie has in the concentration camps. It would be so hard both mentally and physically as they give you just enough food to barley stay alive. I can't wait to read the rest of the book too.
Cade Messer
sarah
Deletei am reading the book A Long Way Gone and it seems they have very similar story lines to a degree. the hardship both our characters face is incredibly similar. i doubt i would be able to live through what eitherof these characters had gone through
Hi Sara,
DeleteElie sounds like he went through a lot of tough times. I have a pretty good background of what happened in the concentration camps and to be able to survive would be very tough. I also agree that if i was in that situation, i definitely would not have lived for very long.
Hey Sara,
DeleteI had this book as my first choice as I am interested in the WWll events, but hearing about some of the things taking place in sounds like a very hard book to read since Elie is writing about his own experience. Hopefully there is a happy ending to come because it sounds like he goes through one tragedy after another.
I agree that Elie faces many challenges but he did handle them well. I think if it were me I would have many struggles and constantly be drained of energy. I'm hoping that they make it out of the camp soon though and can get back to there normal lives.
DeleteI 100% agree with you, I think I wouldn't be able to stay alive for a night because I would try to Rebel against them and I would be killed and not be able to make it far as Elie did.
DeleteI agree with you he is very strong, i dont think i would last i probably would have being tweaking out and would have got shot.
DeleteI agree with you on how Elie Wiesel went through such harsh things at such a young age and still kept going.
DeleteI am reading The Kite Runner. Amir is the main character and he faces many hardships. One hardship Amir faces is seeing Hassan get raped. Amir just sat there and watched while it happened to his friend. He handles this by keeping it to himself and not telling anyone. If I was Amir, I would have stepped in and helped my friend. After helping Hassan, I would reported what happened and make sure the man who did it get the punishment he deserves.
ReplyDeleteHi cade, It seems that everyone that read this book has decided that Amir handled this situation in probably the worst way he could. He never even tried to talk to him or comfort him. I personally think its good that Amir feels guilt for it since what he did was terrible.
DeleteHi Cade,
DeleteI reading the same book and i agree that this was a big hardship Amir faced. I would of done the same thing as you and gone to help my friend. I think Amir took an easy way out. I hope you like the rest of the book.
Hi Cade, I also would've reported the kid who raped him and do whatever I can to comfort Hassan.
DeleteI am reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel, Elie the main character faces lots of challenges while in the concentration camps. One that many others can't do is keep hope, after so much time in there people lose hope but Elie has not yet. I think the fighter jets that bombed the camp also gave the Jews some hope knowing that the US is close. Elie has also gotten beaten multiple times for different reasons but he hasn't lost his mind yet. The conditions of the camps are not very good either. If I were in his position I'm not sure I would be able to keep hope after being there for so long and being treated so poorly.
ReplyDeletehey Sam, I do agree with you but Elie did lose faith is god for a little bit. I thought he held on strong.
DeleteHey Sam, Elie Wiesel tried to believe that there was a purpose for the holocaust, that god had a plan for it. But because of all the horrible things that happened he lost his faith.
DeleteI am reading the book Kite Runner, and the main character is Amir. Amir has faced some difficulties in the book, but the main one being him losing a very close friend. Hassan was his best friend, even though he never admitted it. Hassan and Amir come from different races so it is looked down on. Therefore Amir watches Hassan get raped instead of stepping in and defending his friend. I would not have done that as I could never see anyone get raped, let alone my best friend. I think Amir was just caught up in a bad decision that he wishes he could change, after all he was just 13 years old. It is easy for me to say what I would have done, because I'm not in his shoes at the exact moment.
ReplyDeleteSawyer Nauman
I agree i think amir has just got caught up in bad luck and has to make a decision which is not fun on his part
DeleteHi Sawyer,
DeleteI am reading the same book and i agree with you. It definitely had to be hard for Amir to lose such a close friend and be put in his position at such a young age. I also would of done the same as you and try to help my friend.
I am reading the same book and I agree with you. It was a tough spot to be in but if I was Amir I would have stepped in especially for my best friend.
DeleteI'm sure this would be very difficult to go through, I would also step in knowing that it is your best friend and I would feel obligated to help.
DeleteI am reading the book A Thousand Splendid Suns. The character I am choosing is Mariam. She is the main character and she has a difficult life. First her mom and her live by themselves and her dad only visits once a week. Further into the book her mom kills herself and her dad tries to abandon her. Her dad eventually takes her in but then sends her away to marry a guy she doesn't even know. If I were Mariam I would not like the life shes living. To react to it I would tell her dad that I am not getting married to a guy I don't know and find my own place to live. I would have also not felt like the fault of the mom killing herself because she had mental health issues before she did it. Mariam handles everything with respect and just does what she is told. In my opinion I would not be able to do half the stuff she does.
ReplyDeleteHi Kaitlyn,
DeleteI am reading the same book as you and I agree with you. It would be so hard to enjoy life when you aren't able to choose the people who you life it with as well as having you mother die and you father abandon you Mariam had some struggles that she went through.
i am reading the same book as you and i couldnt imagine being in her spot either. im rooting for her to run away but also where would she go and what would she do because in this time period the book takes place woman need a man. she has a very hard life.
DeleteMy character is Amir from Kite Runner, he is the son of a rich man named Baba. Amir faces many challenges with where he is from. His father Baba is very sick so Amir is facing the hardship of his father dying and that doesn't make things easy for him. He has a friend Hassan who was his servant for a long time but he is more of a friend to Amir than a servant.
ReplyDeletehey Colin, I'm reading night by Elie Wiesel and my book is very similar and Elie is scared of losing his dad because he cant work hard or fast enough.
DeleteI'm reading A Long Way Gone, and the main character is Ishmeal and he used to live in an African country that was torn in a civil war. Ishmeal handles the war exceptionally well for being only 12 years old, he has enough smarts to run for cover and enough braun to climb trees and run for miles.if i were in this situation, i doubt i could do all this as well as Ishmeal. I admit that i know how to climb certain types of trees and i know the lay of the land. But only in certain areas, i cannot run for miles and still understand property lines and various other locations. once i get out of dubuque county, i wont understand what or where im going to.
ReplyDeleteI agree because for being only 12 years old does a good job of thinking ahead and making decisions that will save his life. I know if I were him I probably wouldn't survive as long as he did.
DeleteI'm extremely surprised that a 12 year old kid is making an adult situation every minute and if he messes up or has nothing to work with he is going to die a slow and painful death.
Deletei agree with luke this is alot of pressure getting put on him and only being 12 years old he is pretty brave. he also has to think about his next move the pros and cons
DeleteI am reading The Kite Runner. The main character Amir's best friend Hassan chases down Amir's kite which is worth a lot to him. Hassan gets the kite but is met by 3 guys that are willing to do anything to him to get the kite. Amir sits there and watches his friend get beat up and even raped by one of the three guys. I think that Amir handles his situation terribly and ruined a great relationship by not helping and never saying sorry to Hassan. Amir even tried to get his dad to fire Hassan so that he does not have to deal with his guilt when he sees him every day. Personally I would have tried to help him as he was getting beat up or at least talk to him about it after and clear the air so a great relationship is not ruined.
ReplyDeleteHi Max!
DeleteHope you are liking your book. I think I would do the same thing as you and tried to help him out. I would not be able to let someone get beat and do nothing about it. Hopefully it will get better for Hassan.
Cade Messer
Hi Max, I agree that I would've tried to talk to Hassan after the situation to clear the air. If Amir and Hassan had discussed it I think the book would be a lot different.
DeleteIn the book "Night" the main character Elie is facing one of the toughest hardships that one can face. He is trying to survive the holocaust and make it out alive of the concentration camp. He has to deal with malnutrition, inadequate sleep and tons of hard manual work. Elie tries his best to stay as strong as possible and to never give up. If I was in Elie's shoes I would probably already be dead by now. I would not be able to deal with seeing kids get hung every single day and people be burned. It would eat at me mentally and physically and I would be destroyed. I don't honestly know if I would take my chances and try and run away from the camp or just wait it out.
ReplyDeleteCade Messer
I am also reading night, and i could not imagine being in Elie's shoes! from getting taken away from his mom and siblings to leaving his house he is a strong boy. I also think i would try and wait it out because i don't know where i would go if i got out.
DeleteI can agree wit the "I'd be dead by now" part. My empathy towards others would cause my end.
DeleteI think if that were me, I would not take my chances on running away. They have worked so hard to stay alive and keep their faith and hope. I think it is too late now to try to run away and risk being shot. Also, they know that their has been men that were able to be freed; therefore, I think if they wait it out, they will have a chance to be feed and have a better chance at being alive in the end.
DeleteYeah I would not be able to handle what Ellie goes through. It would definitely destroy me mentally and physically.
DeleteIshmael in A Long Way Gone is 12. His first hardship is losing his parents. Then they have to walk a for a long time facing hunger and dehydration. Then he loses huis friends and his brother. He decides to keep walking and ends up living in the forest for a month by himself. While in isolation in the forest, he faces self reflection and conviction for his past struggles and decisions. I'd say the hardest physical hardship was when the boys had to walk on the hot sand that blistered and ripped their feet to the point that they were bleeding and couldn't walk. I would not be able to walk in the hot sand. I would've tried to dig me feet in to cool them off.
ReplyDeleteI am reading the book a thousand splendid suns and the main character in my book is Mariam. Some things she faces many hardships in the book and has had problems overcoming her moms lost. It was hard for Mariam to than live with her father that she can't even trust. On top of losing her mom from suicided she has had many miscarriages. Mariam has went through a lot of struggles for her age.
ReplyDeletei agree for her age she went through alot of trauma in a short span of time. i could never imagine going through what she has or being treated like she is
DeleteI am reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel and the main character in my book is Elie. Elie struggles with so many things, he is a jew and has gotten taking away from his home and mother and siblings. Elie is only a 15 year old boy but lied about his age that he was 18 so he could stay with his father, so he is getting put to work as if he were an adult. Elie also is strugling with his foot, he just had surgery on it and had to walk 42 miles within the next few days! if I was Elie I simpily do not think I could do it! with the awful stuff he see's and trying to hold on with his dad. also not being able to eat and having to work all the time, Elie is a strong young man.
ReplyDeleteElie is a truly sturdy man. Being able to survive for so long is quite the feat.
DeleteI agree, I don't think I would be able to deal with all the stress. He tries so hard to stay with his dad, but I think if that were me, at that point I would have just gave up by then and forgot about everyone else.
DeleteI also agree. I would not be able to deal with what Ellie goes through on a daily bases. He continues to stay strong even through the hardest times.
DeleteI agree with you he is very strong and i would not have being able to stay alive there to long.
DeleteI am reading the book I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai, main character in my book is Malala. It would be difficult being a woman in Malala home town. Women cannot leave the house without a boy presence, even it is an 5 yr old boy. Also where Malala lives, they do not want women having any equal rights and want them staying home. I would not be able to handle my main character Malala situation. I would not know what to do sense i am not really allowed to leave the house.
ReplyDeleteI would not know what to do with myself if I wasn't able to leave my house as well. Even if it was a 5 year old boy I would loose my mind.
Deletein the book "A Long Way Gone" the main character is Ishmael. he faces a lot of challenges that most 12 years shouldn't have to go through and for how difficult these obstacles are handled them really well. From climbing trees to hide from wild animals or crawling through dead bodies so he wouldn't get shot. if this were me when I was 12 I don't think I could survive as long as he did.
ReplyDeleteIshmael the young boy goes through a lot of issues. His conflicts ranged from being run out of his village by rebels and losing his family, trying to run away from everyone not just the rebels because no one trusts anyone anymore, and then the conflict he faces right now is he is traveling alone. He has been handling everything pretty well for the most part and has the knowledge to be able to keep himself alive. If i was in his situation i don't think i would of handled it as well as he has.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you the way he handles what he has to go through at such a young age is amazing I couldn't believe with all the death hes seen that he thinks its normal.
DeleteI agree that it is surprising that he still lives through all of this and thinks it's normal as well but also if you think about it he really doesn't know what it's like to live a normal life.
DeleteI am reading the book Along way gone" Main character in my book is Ishmael. He goes through alot of struggles being a solider at 12 years old. He has never been properly raised like we do and never gets to stay at home always on the run and fends for himself. If i was Ishmael in this situation i would be dead by now and also i probably wouldn't be able to eat what he does.
ReplyDeleteDang that is crazy I would not imagine being a solider at 12 years old. Hopefully Ishmael doesn't die in war.
DeleteIshmael is always running from something and as soon as he gets out of one issue it always seems like another one pops up. He didnt get to be a child and just go with it because he was thrown into war.
DeleteThat is crazy and unimaginable to be a solder at 12 years old my book also has a strong military presents but more deals with the politics side instead of the actual war
DeleteI Am Malala also has a fairly young character facing hard struggles they shouldn't have to, but it seems like Ishmael's situation is a lot more intense. your book sounds very interesting.
DeleteI am reading the book "The Kite Runner" and the main character in this book is Amir. He is the son of a rich man named Baba that is well known. Amir faces some major challenges but I feel like he deals with them the wrong way and shows how he really is. Amir has a best friend named Hassan, who is the family servant and is loyal to Amir. Amir doesn't have the same loyalty back because when Hassan was getting cornered in an alley by 3 other dudes and Amir watched it all go down. He said he was scared and he just ran away. This was being a bad friend and showed no loyalty for Hassan. I would of went and helped him because he was my bestfriend and helped me before. This made me lose respect for Amir. Hopefully he becomes a better guy throughout the story.
ReplyDeleteIt feels like Amir doesn't truly see him as a friend since he doesn't treat him like one but i feel like throughout the book he will work with it and get better at being a friend
DeleteI am reading I am Malala and the main character is Malala. She struggles with the rights for women in her country. The rules are that a women needs to be accompanied by a male figure, no matter the age, to leave the house. They also are not allowed to get an education. This is hard for Malala because she does not want to be a typical women that stays in the house all day. She values her right to get an education so much that she travels with her father to give interviews. If I were in this situation I would be very confused why all of a sudden I am not able to get an education and have to stay inside. I probably wouldn't to anything about it because of how big our country is I do not think my opinion would matter.
ReplyDeleteyes I think that it sucks that people don't have an opinion because if they do they get murdered immediately and that means that nothing is going to get better in that country and they won't progress
DeleteHello Alyssa,
DeleteI'm reading Night.
Your character and my character Elie Wiesel kind of sound similar in the fact of how they are both going through similar struggles into trying to prove something of themselves. Whether its race or religion their trying to prove something for the greater good.
In the book A Long Way Gone the main character named Ishmael faces challenges like survival and depression while travelling by himself into forest after the war in his village he faced other struggles like if he will find his friends or not and he lost his brother too. This main character struggles to find a place to stay and some food to eat but still he afraid of getting capture by chiefs again. If I was in his situation I have zero clue how deal with any of this and I am not even sure if I will able survive any of this struggles and challenges that he faced.
ReplyDeleteI agree if I was in Ishmael's situation I would not know what to do or how to handle what he has to do to survive.
DeleteI am reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and the main character in my book is Amir. Every winter Amir and his friend participate in the kite flying contest in Kabul. Amir flies the kite and his friend Hassan waits to chase it afterwards. When they finally win the contest, Hassan runs to look for the losing kite. He finds the kite but is then stopped by 3 kids his age. Amir isn't far behind and is watching the encounter from around the corner where he can't be seen. He listens as Hassan gets raped and chooses to do nothing. If I would've been in Amir's position I would have done whatever I could to stop the kids and help my friend, especially if my friend was as loyal as Hassan. Instead Amir pretends he didn't know about it and starts avoiding Hassan. He handled the situation terribly and is the reason Hassan and his father Ali ended up leaving Kabul.
ReplyDeleteHey Abbie,
DeleteI also feel that this was the biggest hardship in the book. Mostly because of how much it not only changes Hassan's life, but this event impacted the outcome of many other characters too.
Hi Abbie
DeleteOn the other side in my book named A Long Way Gone the main character named Ishmael who is supportive and loyal to his friends and their friendship because they have handle of the challenges and the struggles during and after the war in there villages I also feel like you can find out who are your real friends in such difficult situation.
I'm reading "Night", and the main character of said book is Elie himself. He is a prisoner of a concentration camp. He faces challenges such as being forced into situations he'd never want to be in. he only has a sliver of hope left, and it's fading. If I were in said situation, my empathy towards others would have gotten me killed, and fast.
ReplyDeleteI am reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel. The main character in my book is Elie Wiesel. He struggles a lot through the book due to him being a Jew. He has been put in a concentration camp and is separated from everyone in his family except his father. He witnesses several things that nobody should have to see in their lifetime. He witnessed babies getting thrown into a fire, people getting hung, and people getting brutally abused and beat. He is only 15-years-old and he doesn't deserve to see that especially at that age. He also has to walk several miles a day with little to no food. It is very hard for all of them to keep their faith and to think that they will get out of this in the end. Elie continues to try to stay strong through it all and he prays to God for hope. If I were in that position I don't think I would be able to survive. I know I would loose my hope and faith. I would hate not knowing when I would be able to eat next or what I would be doing the following day. I also don't think I would be able to deal with all of the hard work that those guys do. Overall, Elie is doing a very good job at staying strong and trying not to give up because I know I wouldn't be able to be that strong through that all.
ReplyDeleteHi Olivia. I agree that he is doing very well at staying strong and still having hope. The second I would've got separated with my family, I would've lost all hope. I also would've probably gone insane from the trauma if I had witnessed everything he did. For 15 years old, and being put into these crappy situations, Elie is handling it very well.
DeleteHi Olivia. I agree that Elie is staying strong through this whole mess. what he has been through is diffidently to look at into days society because of how relaxed we are. But I would have to say if the time did come for us to see how strong we can be, I would say it will prove and show who we truly are. But I am happy things like Elie had to go through we will not have to go through hopefully ever again.
DeleteI have been reading The Kite Runner and I would say that the main characters are Amir and Hassan and while they both have been going through some hardships I feel like that Amir's have been more developed. Earlier in the story really the only thing that he was dealing with was that him and his father did not see eye to eye on a lot of things and Baba did not care to read his stories and thought he should be playing soccer like the other boys. Recently though, this is no longer Amir's main concern. Hassan was brutally assaulted and instead of helping he ran away in fear as he did not want the same fate. The story has turned from a past pace, cheery story about two good friends coming from different ways of life to now where neither of them can look at each other because of the events taking place. Now to make matters worse, Hassan and Ali are moving away.
ReplyDeleteI think Ishmael in the book a long way gone is handling this situation well in my opinion. The main challenges in this book is finding food and losing his parents which made many more challenges like him seeing people getting killed right before his eyes people at villages not trusting kids and now he lost his friends and is walking alone by himself.
ReplyDeleteI am reading the book A Thousand Splendid Suns and my main characters name is Mariam. her fathers name is Jalil and her mothers we dont know but she calls her Nana. At one point Nana was Jalils servant and he got her pregnant even though he already has 3 wives. Jalil sent her away to live and kept Nana and Mariam a secret. well one day Mariam went to go find jalil and when she did Jalil acted as if he didnt know her because he is embarrassed. when Mariam went back home her mother had killed herself. with no other option at 14 Mariam went to go live with her Father, his 3 wives, and their many children but of course she was unwanted. the quick solution to this was to marry her off to a 40 something year old man far away. this man turns out to be abusive and disgusting so her life completely sucks. but she has no way of avoiding this so she just deals with it and completely hates her life and blames herself for her mothers death still.
ReplyDeleteHi Makayla, I am also reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. And I agree with you. I think Rasheed is absolutely nasty. I think it is ridiculous that Mariam has to go through that.

DeleteI have been reading I am Malala and I would say that the main character is the narrator Malala she has many hardships in her community because there culture the woman are not viewed as equal people they are viewed as baby makers and care takers that's it and in the book when Malala is they woman's rights get tighter because the Taliban join forces with Pakistan and make laws stricter and enforce them with military action and suicided bombers this happens when anyone tries to stand up for what they believed in when someone arrived to Pakistan and advocated for democracy he was murdered soon after he arrived by suicided bomber this is not right the government controls everything and nobody is allowed to have an opinion
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fact that the citizens of Pakistan are very oppressed. this is also why I think people like Malala are really respectable, because they stand up for what they believe in even in the face of danger.
DeleteI am reading Night and the main Character Ellie. He is a 15 year old boy and is a Jew during the Holocaust. He is taken to Auschwitz where he is left with just his dad right now. He is dealing with the problem very well so far and continues to staying calm. He witnesses horrible things at the camp that no kid should have to see. He continues to pray and hope that he will be saved and I don't feel like I would have that type of faith after what he goes through on a daily bases. If I where in his situation I don't think I would have done as well.
ReplyDeleteEllie seams like he is going through a lot. While being young, my Character Mariam is also 15 and she has already experienced so much heartbreak for a young girl.- Maci Steffen
DeleteI agree that I would not have the faith that Elie has if I was in this situation and watching everything happen. I think he handled this situation so much better than I would have personally.
DeleteI agree with everything you said about him. I am reading this book as well and i think he deals with the situations really good. I also don't think if i was in this situation i would deal with it as well as he did.
DeleteI am reading night by Elie Wiesel, Elie is watching out for his dad and is losing faith in god for a little bit but since his dad past the second testing and can still work he is thankful and has hope. He is struggling right now on the death walk with his injured foot. If I was in Elie's shoes I wouldn't know what to do and I would be lost I don't know how he is doing it.
ReplyDeleteishmael the main character of a long way gone is a very brave 12 year old and i dont know how he does it. if i was in his situation i would probably end up dying i would probably do something dumb and end up getting myself killed.
ReplyDeleteI am reading I Am Malala. the main way Malala faces adversity is through the harsh traditions for women, brought by her religion and government. the biggest way she challenges this is by going to school and getting an education, which most girls aren't supposed to do. She also doesn't really seem to plan to be another accessory like all of the other women in Pakistan when she talks about her future. so far there hasn't really been any major threats on Malala but with what is to come I don't think I would personally have the strength to keep going like she does.
ReplyDeleteHey Nolan, I am reading a thousand splendid suns and we have a character that also wants to be able to go to school. In these countries it is not a normal thing and the character in my book actually ended up getting pulled out of school because of the war.
DeleteI am reading the book A Thousand Splendid Suns and the main character I am choosing is Mariam. Mariam is a very tough situation. Mariam's mother has killed herself and has to go live with her father Jalil. Jalil has not spoken to Mariam and is just thinks of her as a burden. Mariam then has an arranged marriage with a 40 year old man named Rasheed. Rasheed seems like an okay guys at first but then takes her virginity as he is annoyed that she is just staying in her room. Personally it is difficult for me not to get frustrated. Because I am not apart of that culture arranged marriages do not make sense to me and just make me frustrated. And personally if I was in Mariam's situation, I would run away. I would try everything to get away from him.
ReplyDelete- Maci Steffen
DeleteHey Maci, I agree. I think that arranged marriages are not fair and I think it is not right. Mariam should be able to get out of the situation but I don't think Rasheed would tolerate her trying to run away. He is all she has.
DeleteI am reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel and Elie is the main character in the book. He is talking about his experience with the holocaust and the concentration camps and at the time this happened to him he was 15 years old. When they arrived to the first concentration camp, he and his dad were separated from his mom and sisters. Elie was approached by a guy who warned him to say he was 18 and for his dad to say he was 40 in which helped them stay together and alive. I think that Elie is handling the situation very maturely for such a traumatic experience especially at 15 years old. He continues to have high hopes and pray and think of the best as he watching all these terrible things happen to people around him.
ReplyDeleteHi Erin,
DeleteThe book you're reading was also a top choice for me to read, so I'm glad you're finding it interesting and really paying attention to what the characters are going through. In the book I am reading the main character is also 15 years old, and I see a lot of similarities between our characters. It's kind of sad how such young people go through these difficult hardships...
Hi Erin.
DeleteBoth our characters face alot of adversity. our books are similar in alot of ways
I am reading A thousand Splendid Suns. Mariam faces a lot of adversity in this book by the culture standards that they have. When the book first started she was a disgrace from Jalil and he sent her and her mom away. She also is expected to be a housewife of a man that almost abuses her. Mariam seems to take all of these things with a grain of salt just because she is used to these actions. If I were her, I would stand up to Rasheed and Jalil. I would show them that she is more than just a house wife and what she is capable of.
ReplyDeletehi Amelia.
Deletehope you're enjoying your book. I'd do the same if I was in her position.
I am reading the book night and the main character is the author Elie Wiesel. He is fifteen years old and he faces many challenges and many hardships at a very young age. But being this young he is handling all of these struggles very well. If I was in his position i don't think i would handle these situations as well as him but i would try my best. Having little to no food or little sleep would take a big toll on me.
ReplyDeleteHi Vada,
DeleteThis seems like a really interesting book so far. The main character that I chose in my book is also 15 years old and facing several challenges that a child shouldn't have to deal with. I agree with you when you say you don't know what you would do in this situation because at such a young age it's not really normal to deal with such hardships.
I am reading the book "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini. One of the main characters I am choosing is Mariam. Mariam is currently going through a very rough patch, as her mother has hung/killed herself and Mariam now has to go live with her father Jalil. Jalil is suddenly acting very shady towards Mariam and I believe he sees her as a problem now. Mariam then is involved in an arranged marriage with a weird 40 year old man named Rasheed. He seems like an odd guy at first and a lot of the reason I think this is because he takes her virginity when she's literally a child. I guess I think of Rasheed as a child rapist now but it might just be because of how the world is today now and it's seen as wrong but it was normal back then. Personally it is difficult for me not to get frustrated with some of these characters because it seems like you can never make them happy. Like when Mariam could not get pregnant and had all these miscarriages, I'm not really sure what this grown adult expects out of a 15 year old girl. It's not like she's even of a proper age to carry children. Probably run away or kms
ReplyDeleteHi Eve,
DeleteYour book seems very interesting and sad. I personally like sad books so I would probably like that book a lot. Do you like sad books?
I am reading the book "A Long Way Gone" and the main character is a young boy named Ishmael. He has seen so many things that would scar you for life. He has to climb trees and live in the forest for a while. He also has to find food for himself and he is only 12. If I was in his situation I would not know what to do and probably wouldn't survive.
ReplyDeleteHey Leah :)
DeleteThat sounds very interesting to have a main character with such a unique point of view. How are you liking it so far?
I am reading Night and the main character, Elie is going into auschwitz. He is getting pushed around and has no say in anything but yet is still pushing through with barely any sleep or food. i dont think i would be able to stay alive as long as him he is very strong.
ReplyDeleteIn the book "Night", the character I choose that has the most challenges is the main character and writer of the book Elie Wiesel. Elie or Elizers challenges in the book is quite sever and horrific by going through the concentration camps and getting beat up no matter how far they go. But the way he handles these sever challenges is really probably not the best way to do it but, its the only way he see's fit to is one to leave the religion, two is to keep his father alive and to stay strong for him, and three is to make sure he survives. If I was in this main characters situation, I would to probably drop out of the religion that he is in, because of seeing the gore and seeing no repercussions of any kind for the actions the Germans have taken.
ReplyDeleteI am reading the book I am Malala and the main character is Malala. Malala views challenges in the book by facing them head on and see what she can do for that problem or solutions. Some of the hardships and struggles that she had to face was the bombing of the schools which was a big part of the book so far. If I was in the main character's place and be in the solution she was in I don't think that I could handle what had happen to her.
ReplyDeleteI am reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel and the main character in my book is Elie. Elie struggles with so many things, he is a jew and has gotten taking away from his home and mother and siblings. Elie is only a 15 year old boy but lied about his age that he was 18 so he could stay with his father, so he is getting put to work as if he were an adult. And that he lied was able to stay with his father took a lot out of him i would say. Doing the work that adults that are suppose to be doing as a 15 year old boy you would be drained.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Malala. She is facing a lot of adversity because not only is she fighting women's right over going to school and all the things they can not do with a men being with them. She is also fighting for Educational rights. Not only she has problems with that but she is facing adversity with the Taliban causing problems in Swat/Pakistan. It's hard for me to say what I'd do in Malala's situation because it's a very different living situation they had vs what I have
ReplyDeleteI am reading the book Night. The main character's name is Elie. The book starts off by showing that he is very religious and worships God. This all changes when there starts to be separation between Jews and Germans. He has to face adversity because the Jewish people now have to wear yellow stars on their clothes in public to separate them from everyone else. They also are not allowed on public transportation. Elie still stays pretty positive believing that it is all under God's plan.
