  1. I am reading the book "I am Malala". So far, the book starts really slow, which I am not a fan of, because I get bored really easily. The primary focus right now is, Malala is explaining her situation and where she grew up and how she grew up. She explains her family life and about her parents. She also went into a little bit of detail about how she got shot and the details that led to that. I was attracted to this novel because I thought reading about someone who got shot just because she wanted an education would be interesting. I thought it would be fun to learn about different cultures and different times of the world. So far, it is a little slow and I hope it gets more interesting, and I think I will end up liking the book.

    1. I agree the book is slow. I thought it was weird how the book started off with her getting shot, but I think the author did that to get us hooked on. I think it'll get more interesting as we read, we just need to get through all the information Malala is giving us.

    3. Hi Kaylee,
I do agree with you that the beginning is very slow and I too get bored easily. I also thought that this would be an interesting book to read to learn more about other cultures. I think and hope that the story plot picks up and we get to learn more about the culture after the information about Malala's life.

I wish I got this book, this was my one of top choices because actually I feel like I would more relate to this kind of concept because I am also part of the south Asia and I know the struggle of girls and guys being able to go the schools and many more. But I hope this book picks up at some point so you will have interest in it.

    6. I agree that the book has a slow start, for me it is mainly because of all of the history and facts about Pakistan. history topics always make me loose interest especially if its about something I don't already have a little knowledge on before hand.

  2. I am reading the book "1,000 Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. This book is very confusing from the start and slow. The focus of the novel is about a girl named Mariam. All she has is Nana and Jalil. Jalil always tells her great stories about the city and his past but Nana tells her not to believe anything he says. Still she believes him. My initial thoughts of this book so far is it is a very boring book and hard to stay engaged. It also uses slang in it which can be hard to understand unless i look it up

I am reading the other novel by Khaled Hosseini and I have noticed a similar start to the story. It gets goin really slow and it is hard to stay engaged in the reading. Also some of the wordy used is confusing where I have to go back and reread it. Hopefully both of our books start to get more interesting.

This book feels boring but new thing happen and it suprises you that you go hm what going to happen next and keep reading. the starting of the book kinda jumped right in at the start it was an intro then out of no where were in the middle of the war. my first impression on this book is it is way easier to read then stotan it just jumps around to much.

    1. Not sure they are the Taliban who is chasing them. The only people that have died that are important are the kid's parents. I look at the book from the present. He is in New York and is recalling his war stories from home. He flashes back to two different times. One when he is still at home, and once while he is in the middle of the war fighting.

  4. I am reading "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini. I am only about 20 pages in and it has been a slow start. I don't think that is a bad thing though because most of the first few chapters is setting up the seen and the characters. So, while not much has happened, I have a really good visualization of Amir and Hassan and also what Afghanistan was like in the last century. I am excited to read further into the lives of the two very different boys. Amir being from a rich home, but with no mother and a father who does not spend time with him and Hassan who lives in a mud shack with his loving father Ali. Even though they come from very different ways of life, they have developed a close friendship. Overall, I look forward to continuing with the book now that most of the setup is out of the way.

  5. I have the book Kite Runner, and the first part of the book is just the author explaining some of the characters. I would say it starts slow, but I don't mind this book starting slow. As expected, the book is somewhat challenging to read at times because this is written about a different culture. I am only 58 pages in so I am wondering if it will get harder. The author throws a lot of information at you in a short amount of time, so I wrote some of the main things down on a notecard. I am not exactly sure what the main focus is yet, I do know that Amir, the main character seems to worry about what his dad thinks about him.

I understand when you say the book starts slow and the author just describes the main characters. Also the part about the different culture. My book talks about the culture a little bit. It almost seems like an American place where there is poverty. There is only one T.V. in their hometown. There is some heritage we learn about with their family names. The author does not describe the settings very well.

I haven't read a lot but for now the beginning is slow and I haven't got into it yet. Trying to get all the characters and their jobs down is hard. I also think it makes it difficult when they put in nonenglish words, this makes you try to use your context clues to figure it out. Right now it is Mariam talking to Nana about stories and their daily rations. Jalil is very optimistic and is the opposite of nana.

  7. Reading A Long Way Gone. The title attracted me towards the book. The title relates to the book because the boy has flashbacks from his home in Africa, which is a long way from his new home in New York. It is a relatively slow start to the book. It is kind of bland because it is a flash-back and you know he made it through it. The main characters are not described well, but the important characters like his mother and father are. And they are assumed dead almost right away

The author, Elie Wiesel is telling his story as a little Jewish boy during the holocaust and as a little boy he is handling this extreme situation very maturely. 10. A Long Way Gone is a very action packed book, I'm only 20 pages in and the book has already set the tone and speed for the action. The book starts with a peaceful first 10 pages, but quickly develops into the chaos and graphic imagery of a war torn country. I wanted to read this book beings its theme is about war and how it affects the people in the country. The main characters handle the war rather well for being only 12 years old. If I was in his position, I would highly doubt that I could handle it like he has. I am interested to see how the rest of this book plays out and will enjoy reading this book.

  11. I am reading Night by Elie Wiesel. It is an amazing book right now. The thing that attracted me to the book was that it takes place during the 1940's and is about a young kids life during the holocaust. Ever since 8th grade when I learned about the Nazi's and the holocaust in a class, I have been very interested in it. Since it is something I knew I was interested about, I knew this book would be an easy read for me. So far the primary focus of the novel is Elie's journey to Auschwitz. It talks about his experience of being kicked out of his home, transported to the camp, and now at the concentration camp. For a 15 year old kid I think he is handling it really well. If it was me I would be so messed up that the Germans would have already killed me. The only thing on his mind is to stay with his dad. He has held his fathers hand tightly and they are trying to navigate the concentration camp together. The book was not a slow start at all either which helped me to be intrigued early. It jumped right into the Wiesel family getting kicked out of there home. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the story as it has been super interesting so far.

      Delete
    2. I agree, I think that Elie is handling this really well for him being that young. If I was 15 years old and this happened to me, I don't think I would cooperate as well as he did. He listened to what the prisoner told him to say about his age and he didn't talk unless he had to. If I were to get separated from my mom and my sisters, I would be worried as to if they were still alive or not. Overall, Elie is handling everything well for being so young and having so much change to his life in a short amount of time.

As I start to read the first part of the book is a little tough to read. It is hard to understand what is happening and that is making for a slow start. The main focus of this book is about a child and his father who is rich but does not like his son because of what he does in his free time. The book definitely has been interesting so far and I hope it stays that way.

  23. I am reading book night and what attracted me to the book is the history that is being told by the author that experience everything in the holocaust. The primary focus of the book right now is Elie and his parents and others Jews are transported to concertation camp and while being transported they are being treated poorly in the cattle cars because there's 80 of them in one car and my initial thought on that its so sad they had to go through all that.

    2. Hi Alik,
I'm reading Night too. I have a fascination with the Holocaust (and criminals in general) so this book is very good for me. Do you like how the book started?

  24. I am reading the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel. I was attracted to this novel, because I wanted to learn more about the Holocaust. I have watched the movie The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and I really liked it and I wanted to learn more about what happened to the Jews and their personal stories. Elie, the main character, shares his story about the holocaust and the concentration camp. He shares how they were kicked out of their home and how him and his father were separated from the rest of his family. Elie stays mostly quite because he doesn't know what is happening, but he is curious as to what is going on. He also listens to what he is told because the German soldiers keep threatening to shoot the Jews. After reading the first few chapters, I think the book is moving really fast, but it is also a shorter book. It is a little harder to keep up with, due to the diverse wording. Overall, I really like the book so far, but sometimes it is tough to read because it gives great detail about the concentration camp which is sad to think that the Jews went through this.

  25. I am reading A Long Way Gone "memoirs of a boy soldier" by Ishmael Beah, so far book in book the primary focus is main character and how he struggles to survive during war and makes us think how things can get challenged in life that will even make you change but its all in you that keep you alive are your ambitions. The main character and other characters are haling the situation very gently and delicately because of they are so new to this war situation and they do not know how to survive on there own. The first few chapters of the book focus on the war and the flashbacks he has and his nightmares about him handling the situation. I could say this is not a slow start it actually jumps rights in the story so far I am liking the book.

    1. Hello Jaksh,

I'm reading Night, and your book connects to my book in many ways including war and how it can change from better to worse. But my book is the complete opposite of your book from jumping into it right away, because it actually starts off slow with Elie Wiesel background story of her whole experience in his small village and how day to day life goes, and slowly gets into the days when the Germans started to infiltrate the people of the town. So I would say his background story needs to be include or otherwise it really wouldn't be his story telling.

  26. I am reading "I am Malala" in the beginning of the book it is very slow. She mostly talks about her background and what type of family she grew up around. I was interested in this novel because Malala had gotten shot in the head and survived it. Then she stood up for girls opportunity to have an education. I think the primary focus so far is how the women of their country are treated by men. My first impression of the book was that it was slow and was going to be a hard read and hard to stay focused.

    2. I decided to read The Kite Runner but I was also interested in reading I am Malala because she got shot in the head. I wonder why she was shot and if she was able to make a full recovery. I hope you enjoy the rest of your book.

  27. I am reading the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel. What attracted me to this book is the history of the Jews being discriminated for there race and culture, and I share some of that history because I am part Jewish. The main focus of my novel is the Jews being discriminated by the Germans and the Hungarian police. And the characters are handling it by listening to everything the Germans tell them to do. After the first several pages, it was a slow start with mostly explaining Elie Wiesel day to day life in his village, and then slowly starts to get real up to the double digit pages.

  28. I'm reading "Night" by Elie Wiesel. I can't express how much I love reading this book. It's fast paced, so I never get bored. It's interesting to peek into the life of a prisoner of a concentration camp. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna read another five chapters.

  29. I am reading the book A Long Way Gone and I really like it so far. I am not very far into it yet but I like what I have read so far. It is about a group of kids who's village got attacked by the rebels. They see a bunch of people running from their village with gunshot wounds. I am impressed by how well they are handling the situation being only 12 years old.

From the brief description you left it sounds like a type of book I would read. Does the book explain any characters or why the village is getting attacked by rebels? Being 12 and seeing gun shot wounds on people that are like family would be hard. If I was reading this book I would be impressed as well with them handling the situation if they are doing good.

  30. I am reading Night by Elie Wiesel. The reasoning I wanted to read this book was I like history and learning about all the different story's people went through at the time. so far the is really good and I am enjoying it, it does move pretty quick. Elie was just 12 almost 13 and already going through a lot. He is learning how to deal with things maturely and I think he is doing great so far.

  31. I am reading the book "A thousand splendid suns" by Khaled Hosseini. I did not get to choose my book because I was gone but I would have choose this one anyways. The thing that draws me to the book is the cover. The cover of the book makes it look adventurous and that is the kind of books I like. The primary focus on the book right now is just the main character Mariam telling about her life. She seems to have mixed feelings about her mother and father. Sher also seems like she just does what she is told from everyone so she can keep everyone happy. My thoughts on the book is that it starts really good. It takes time to explain things before just jumping into the book. So far I enjoy reading this book and I hope it continues like that.

  32. I am reading the book a thousand splendid suns and I chose this book because it was based about a girl and from a girls perspective for the reasoning of I connect to girls thoughts and feelings easier then guys. Starting out the book and reading the first 5ish chapters out of the 51 total I thought this book was nothing special and actually boring. But boy was I wrong, I'm now on chapter 15 and I love the book! it definitely has my attention and moves at a fast pace with things happening left and right keeping me intrigued after every chapter I read. So far I am very pleased with my choice.

  35. i am reading The Kite Runner. This book was my first option and i am pleased with it already. i was instantly hooked in the book. listening to the characters talk about their childhood instantly made me connect to my childhood, climbing trees and getting in trouble. amir and hassan both grew up without their mothers. I could not imagine not having my mother all throughout my life, that has to be terrible. the book is off to a good start and I'm excited to see what happens in the rest of the book.

  36. I am reading A Long Way Gone. It starts off extremely slow and it has a ton of back and fourth future self and past self of the main character it talks about his friends what he did when he was trying to get better at speaking a language. Also, it talks about his village getting raided and attacked by rebels and at this time he was twelve years old seeing people getting shot and killed from the age range of them being a newborn all the way up to and old person that can't fight back.

  39. I am reading the book Kite Runners, the book starts out slow because the author is introducing all the characters but the book eventually picks up and gets better. I am enjoying the book so far and i like the pace of the story.

  41. I am reading The Kite Runner and I'm about 65 pages in. The book started off pretty slow but is starting to become more interesting. I have a good picture of each character in my mind and can imagine Afghanistan although I've never seen it. The primary focus of the book right now is talking about how the city Kabul changed over night. When the king was out of town his cousin formed a coup and took over their government. I don't think Hassan and Amir have any idea what's going on yet.

  42. The book I got was I Am Malala. It is about a Pakistani girl named Malala who is trying to fight for women's rights, especially the right to education.my biggest problem so far is when the author is trying to explain all of the symbolic names. I don't know how important the meanings of the names are but I will have a rough time later in the book if they are. I am also struggling with the history of Pakistan and its surrounding countries that is being explained in the beginning. otherwise all of the background on the characters is pretty easy to understand.

  43. I chose the book “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khalid Hosseini. The book so far is kind of confusing. The main character Malala has her mother Nana and her father Jalil. I’ve learned about what happens to Nana and how she got pregnant. And I think it is very interesting that men can get away with that in there culture. But not much has happened other than that.

  44. I chose the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel. This book is easily understood I personally think. It also moves at a fast pace as a lot of things happen very quickly. The main character which is Elie, explains what he is going through as him and his family is being forced to move to the concentration camps. I think him and his father are handling the situation very well compared to the rest. They are staying calm and trying to find the bright side of things while others are breaking down completely. So far I am really enjoying this book.

I know you are very interested in the Holocaust and want to learn a lot more about the events so I'm glad you are enjoying the book so far. I also am interested in the events that took place in the mid 1900's throughout Hitler's reign. Hopefully this makes a lot of sense to you as I've heard it is a difficult read for many.

  46. The book that I am reading is "Night" by Elie Wiesel. This book caught my eye because it was based upon the Holocust and that topic really interests me. The book is very fast pace so it didn't take long for the story to begin in the book. In the begging it discuss the history so it starts off sort of slow but it isn't terrible. The main character Elie truly showcases what a 15 year old boy would be experiencing this during this time. I'm excited to see what the rest of this book has all to share.

  48. I did not get to choose my book but the main focus of my book is the power and importance of education and it shines light on the troubling times across the seas in her country. The main character gets alot of how she acts from her father, which influences why she stands up for herself and education. It's very slow in the beginning and I hope it picks up.

  49. For this novel, I chose the book Night. I chose to read this book because I read a few summaries and I thought the book sounded interesting. At the beginning of the book, it all starts off pretty happy but easy to read. At the beginning, it's like a waiting game. As someone who has some knowledge about the Holocaust, I knew that things were going to get worse. One of the things I liked at the beginning was the dramatic irony of knowing that something was going to happen, and the characters aren't expecting it.
