Stotan!, Chinese Handcuffs, Running Loose, and Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes all involve intense topics that add to the plot. Talk about the point in which you became hooked into your book. What did Chris Crutcher do to hook you? Describe any moment or moments in the book where you didn't want to put the book down. What will you always remember about this book?
I remember reading right in the middle of my book when the main character, Louie Banks became so much more interesting. Louie himself has a lot of traits which makes it so much easier to read because I can relate the book to my own life. I also remember a specific moment in the book where I did not want to stop reading. It was when the coach was telling the team to go after Washington because he was a really good player. I knew from there it was just going to get interesting. One thing I will always remember about this book is how much it reminds me of Epworth. They both are small towns who just love football, with a little bit of drama, of course.
ReplyDeleteKaylee
I can agree with you about Louie. His character becomes much more mature and much more energetic person after the football game. If Louie didn't change his life to the events that had happened, this book would have lost my interest a long time ago.
DeleteHi Kaylee,
DeleteThat sounds really interesting and if I was reading this book i feel like that moment would not make me want to stop reading. They way you explained it makes me want to get the book and read it myself.
I agree with you that after Louie's flip out it made the book so much more interesting and made me want to read more. If that didn't happen it would of made the book much more boring and I would have lost major interest in my reading. I also agree that the book reminds me of Epworth and one of the main reasons I liked the book so much.
DeleteHi Kaylee,
DeleteMy book Chinese Handcuffs also started to get interesting during the middle of the book. I feel like your book has a lot going on during the entire thing does it get confusing at times?
I'm glad you can connect to the book you are reading because that always makes it easier to read for sure. I Know I love it when I can almost picture what is happening in the book happening in my own town, it makes the book feel real. Your book sounds really good and I might have to read it on my own time.
DeleteHey Kaylee!
DeleteI can relate with you a lot about one thing you will remember the most about this book. Small town football is crazy! It is sweet to see how many people care about the game no matter if it is in Epworth, Iowa or the middle of nowhere in Idaho. Small towns are definitely awesome places!

Running Loose got me hooked to reading it during the football game against Salmon River. Reading how Louie reacted to seeing Boomer destroy Washington just made the book so much more action packed. Not to mention after the game, Louie gets even more encounters with Boomer and various other people he knows. Running loose has been an entertaining book and I will enjoy reading it till the end.
ReplyDeleteEric Allen. This book seems really good and the more your guys group talks about it the more i want to read it.
DeleteHi William,
DeleteRunning Loose sounds like a pretty interesting book and I'm glad that you and your group are enjoying it. Sports books are not always something that I enjoy but this was sounds like a pretty good one.
Hi Will,
DeleteIt sounds like your enjoying your book, and it sounds like the author does a great job trying to connect the characters with his readers. Personally I'm not a fan of sports books but this one sounds unique. Hopefully the end of your book doesn't disappoint.
There definitely was a lot that happened during the football game that made it interesting. The first part of the was going well with it being a close game as they traded touchdowns until they had Boomer go out and injure Washington.
DeleteHi Will,
DeleteI am glad you are enjoying your book. I am reading the same book and agree with you when the game was when it sparked. It was really action packed and made me want to keep reading. I hope you like the rest of the book.
This part in the book stuck out to me as well. I was a little surprised when Louie went all in on them like that.
DeleteHey Will!
DeleteI totally agree with you 100%! The Salmon River game is what hooked me too! Just not knowing whether or not someone would actually take out Washington is what kept me reading! I actually can't wait to read the rest of the book to see how the book turns out.

Eric Allen. Chris Crutcher Hooked me by the way the kids push to do the best they can and how strong their friendship is and the way they all bond. the parts are when they were working out during stotan week, max was giving them motivation and committed to making them work and work no matter what. another is when they were saying storys and nortie or jeff was talking about how they stood over a beunett.
ReplyDeleteHi Eric,
DeleteI totally agree with you on this one. If he didn't explain the tough workouts they did and how they have to stick together or they had to stick together to get through it. I liked the story Nortie told about happened his brother, and the bayonet story Jeff told about his time in military. It made me realize how tough these guys are.
Hi Eric!
DeleteI think Stotan sounds like a really good book! When the kids are trying their best during working out is very important. Also when they push each other mentally and are always there for each other, that is also important. When you are reading a book that is positive vibes, it just wants you to keep reading. I would be hooked onto this book as well because all the characters seem so nice and kind.
Kaylee Schueller
I agree with you on this one also. This part hooked me also, it made me want to hear their back story because everyone has a back story about them. They way that they share these stories makes their bond of friendship stronger.
DeleteThe way you're describing this book on how it grabbed your attention sounds like it would grab my attention because the way these characters are motivated and how their bond is strong. I would definitely read Stotan if I had the chance.
Deletei agree because most kids that were in tough positions would just leave or take the easy way but, in my book, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, he has Eric pushing his self to help his best friend stay safe rather then just letting it go.
DeleteI got hooked to the book right about the eve of Stotan week. Just reading ho they were all curious of what Max was going to make them do during this week and I honestly was too. They way he talked about it really made you want to keep reading and after he got me hooked i was hooked for the whole rest of the book. I feel like the biggest moment when I didn't want to put the book down was during Stotan week it was so well explained about the tough workouts they did and it kept wanting me to find out if they become a Stotan or they quit out on it. I feel like i will always remember in this book the time when Lion randomly had huge energy and was able to do the workout with ease.
ReplyDeleteEric Allen. i thought i was crazy what they did during stotan week pushing them selfs and putting eachother to the test to the point where i seemed like they were going to shut down and it also got me hooked. I was confused on why or how lion became a monster during those workout like he did workout like they were nothing which also made me want to keep reading it to see what lion was going to do further in the book.
DeleteHi Andrew,
DeleteStotan week sounds very interested, if I was reading this book I think I would be hooked as well. I do not know a lot about the Stotan week, but from the sounds of it, it sounds exciting. Becoming a monster while working out is scary, and I would want to know what happens next. This would want me to keep reading.
Kaylee Schueller
Stotan week sound very interesting, and it sounds like I would get hooked on it as well. It reminds me a lot about the first week of football practice where we have 2 a days and condition a whole lot. The lion part is very different and I would want to find out more about what happens next. I would easily want to read this book after hearing what you said.
DeleteI agree with you about the way that they talk about Stotan week just makes you want to keep reading and it got good real fast.
DeleteI agree with you about the eve of Stotan week its very interesting
DeleteI agree, I will always remember Lion's weird energy the one day. It was funny because they were so sore and tired that he just gave it his all because if you keep dreading it, the day goes on to be way longer. I feel like I also get weird spurts of energy to get things done that I dread.
DeleteI kind of agree the eve of Stotan week was a interesting part of the book I don't think it was the most interesting I thought it was when Lion was standing face to face with Norties dad that one had me really into the book
DeleteThe point I became hooked on in Running Loose is when Bommer injured Washington and the main character Louie Banks flipped out on the sideline. He hooked me on that because there was going to be a lot of drama from that point on and it was very relatable to me and reminds me a lot of Epworth along with being a senior in high school.. I didn't want to stop reading after that dirty hit because Louie flipped out and got kicked off the team and I knew the rest of the book was gonna to be drama filled. Another point in the book I didn't want to put it down in was when Louie's girlfriend dies and he is heartbroken it made me want to find out what he was going do after losing the love of his life. I will never forget how the book reminds me of Western Dubuque. There were both small towns schools who love football with a little bit of high school drama involved.
ReplyDeleteBeing able to relate parts of the book to your life must make the book much more interesting. Especially since the book is about football.
DeleteThis is also the point i got pulled into the book as well because he made it very clear on the field that what happened he felt was wrong. He was yelling at the ref and his coach saying it wasn't a clean hit and telling the ref to call something. This did end up causing some friction between him, the coach, the school, and with Boomer
DeleteHi Tyler,
DeleteI agree with this part of the book being the part that hooked me. It was interesting to see how everyone reacted to the events and it was a big turn in the book. This part of the book made me want to keep reading and see where everything goes. I hope you enjoy reading the rest of the book.
Hi Tyler, this is also the point if the book where I became the most hooked and count stop reading. I excited to continue reading and finding out what is going to happen.
DeleteHi Tyler, it seems to me that everyone that read this book found this part very interesting. Both parts of this book were very intriguing and I can not wait to see what happens moving forward.
DeleteI am reading the book Chinese Handcuffs and when the book first started is when I became the most hooked on my book. Dillon caught my interest right away as a reader because my first impression of him was that he is very dedicated to what he does and he's still pretty young for everything he has accomplished. Not to spoil anything for those who are not as far as I am but when Preston committed suicide that was when I didn't want to put the book down because it was slowly starting to pick back up after the fast beginning of the book. I think Chris Crutcher in general has an interesting writing style that makes it easy to become hooked in a book which I admire because reading for me hasn't always been the most enjoyable pass time for me so when I can find a book that I don't hate reading that's always a plus.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with when you got hooked on the book because that is when I too was interested. Chris Crutcher does have a interesting way of writing like you said but I like it. I'm glad you are enjoying the book as much as I am.
DeleteDillon also caught my interest early on because of the way he acts. He seems very mature and I agree that he is very dedicated to the things he enjoys. I hope you're enjoying the book.
DeleteHi Makenna
DeleteThis book sounds different with bit of young generation touch, this kind of reminds me of my book too when tragedy told place that's when the climax of the book started to open up and made all of us hooked to the books. This what I like about Chris Crutcher how he starts slow but does not pick up until last few chapters I am glad that you liking the book so far.
I am reading the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes and the part i got hooked on the book was when Mark attempted suicide because it surprised me and i didn't see it coming. Before that the book was kind of up and down, with some parts being fun to read then the book would slow down and i would lose focus and lose my place. After Marks suicide attempt the book really picked up and things got interesting very fast.
ReplyDeleteHi Colin,
DeleteI find it interesting that Chris Crutcher uses the same sort of plot for all of the books. At least in our books there have been an attempted suicide. This draws readers in because of the severity of the issue. Suicided is no joke, it makes me think he has been directly impacted by a suicide.
The moment the author hooked me was when Dillon started writing letters to his dead brother. This happened almost right away in the book. A moment I didn't feel like putting the book down is happening right now; Jennifer agrees to get help regarding her predicament she is in. Dillon, coach and Jen are going to come up with a plan to put an end to her abusing step dad. I think that because the author switches perspectives, and tells the story from a 3rd person point of view that it adds drama to the cause. I only have 20 pages left so I am curious to see what happens yet.
ReplyDeleteThat moment sounds intriguing and must have been a very good part in the book. Dillons brother must have been an important person in his life if he is still writing too him.
Deletei agree with you, that is also another big point in the story that gets you hooked and its almost immediately aswell
DeleteI am reading the book Chinese Handcuffs and I can say that I was hooked from the start. The first paragraph is Dillon Hemmingway writing a letter to his dead brother that you later find out died from suicide. Right away that drew me in. It almost made me feel compelled to keep reading and figure out the reasoning. After finishing the first paragraph I was left with a lot of questions like why he died, whys he writing letters to him and much more. I liked the way he hooked the reader I just wish the answers to the questions he gave us came a little earlier then the middle of the book.
ReplyDeleteI also really enjoyed the beginning of the book! The way you can feel how Dillon is feeling just by reading his letters to Preston makes the book so fun to read.
DeleteI totally agree with you that I wish the answers came earlier in the book I feel like it would help you visual it and relate to it better. I'm glad you are enjoying your book
DeleteThe author does a good job of making sure you feel for the characters.
DeleteHi Makayla,
DeleteThis book sounds like a good book and I hope you liked it! This book sounds super intense and like a good read. I'm reading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes and its also a really good read.
I am reading the book Stotan. This book really started to hook me around the time that Stotan week started. The spot that hooked me good was when they talked about their own Stotan stories and how they all reacted and responded to it. Also, this part hooked me because I wasn't sure if someone was going to quit on Stotan week. During the Stotan week part I found that it was difficult for me to put the book down because it makes your mind wander sometimes.
ReplyDeletei agree with you in the part that trying to imagine what's going to happen next and when you finally hear what happens it's like a feeling of closer almost because you finally know what happens
DeleteI agree, I thought that one of the four boys was going to quit Stotan Week. The way Chris Crutcher described how sore the boys were and how tired, he almost made it seem like one of them was going to quit or leave one of the days. Going through the hard times together is what makes them closer and a true team.
DeleteHey Luke,
DeleteI became hooked more so before Stotan week began, but I was able to stay engaged with the story during the first couple days of the week when the crew had to go through some intense workouts. It reminded me of the first couple weeks of cross country. Only having a couple of days to prepare for the first meet, the practices are a grind and I am overwhelmed with soreness. So I understand why the guys though about getting out of Stotan Week.
I am reading staying fat for Sarah Byrnes and the book started getting interesting for me is when Eric and Ellerby were talking to Dale in his garage. When Dale started showing Eric what he knows about Sarah I was shocked. This was when we found out Sarah's dad was the one that burned her face and how Sarah wants to kill herself. From this point on I was hooked. Anytime we find anything out about Sarah's mental health and what she was thinking I can't seem to put the book down. Chris Crutcher is good at leaving you breadcrumbs as hints of what will be happening. He knows when to give for details and information to keep you reading and interested in the book.
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds super good! Chris Crutcher also does that in Chinese Handcuffs and it makes me want to keep reading more. Glad you enjoying your book.
Deletei would say if i didn't pick the part where Sarah started to talk i would have picked this part because its interesting to see Eric do all the things he possibly can to help his best friend even if it could put him in harms way.
DeleteYeah, this caught me off-guard as well. I wasn't interested up until this point.
DeleteHi Amelia I totally agree with you too I was pretty shocked with the news that Sarah shares with Eric that her father was the devil man who made her feel miserable and wanted to kill herself because what he done to her. This is where my suspense started to build up on this book.
DeleteI got hooked at the same part. I originally thought the story was true what she was telling people til I read what Dale told Eric I then believed that her dad would do that.
DeleteThere are many points in the book where you can get hooked at any moment, but this part caught my eye as well.
Deletethis sounds like a really good book aswell, it seems like tragedies are a common theme that crutcher implements into the book to get you hooked.
DeleteThe moment I became hooked in the book Chinese Handcuffs was when the point of view was switched to Jennifer's. I loved reading and feeling the intensity of the close basketball. Plus the pressure she was feeling beforehand with all of the newspaper press calling her the best player made it that much better (spoiler) when she made the shot. I am also really liking the writing style of Chris Crutcher. The way he switches back and forth between time of years and main characters, it makes it more interesting to read and follow along.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this because the switching between different point of view's allows us to learn about the characters more personally. even though the switching was a little strange at first I'm glad it was used.
Deletethe moment I got hooked in Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes was when she finally stated to talk to Eric again. In that moment it showed how much trust Sarah was putting in Eric to not say anything to anyone, especially her dad. and when she knew he didn't say anything she felt more comfortable telling him what really happened the night she was burn and i wanted to keep reading because i wanted to see where Eric would go with the information about who Sarah's dad really is.
ReplyDeleteyour book sounds very interesting i feel like if I were reading it I would be hooked on that part of the book as well
DeleteThis too was when I started to get interested.
DeleteI have not gotten this far, but as soon as Dale said something to Eric it sounded more realistic. And I think that's why Sarah told Dale because they have similar home life, both their parents are disgustingly rude.
DeleteIt was interesting when she started talking again because there was always a suspicion that she was faking it. It made things interesting when she made Eric not talk to anyone about it and act like she wasn't talking to the nurse.
DeleteHi Mackenzy,
DeleteI am also reading this book and it is such a good read. At this part i was a the edge of my seat and couldn't put the book down! I am further than you and I hope you like how the book turns out.
In my book Running Loose the point where i got hooked was when Louie took a stand to his coach during the football game when the coach had Boomer intentionally hurt the other teams player Washington so they would have an easy win with there best player being out. This was what caught my attention because Louie stood his ground for what he thought was right and it really showed his personality standing up for what he believed in.
ReplyDeleteI thought that was interesting that he stood up for what he believed in because he was the only player on that team that stood up for Washington while everyone on his team was hyping up Boomer.
DeleteI thought that it was real cool that he could do that infront of all the people of his town. Even when he was yelling at the refs i thought that that was a good idea because he was already so into it.
DeleteWhat got me hooked onto the book is when Boomer injures Washington and that really set Louie off because it was a setup and the ref didn't call it and I think that moment really made an huge impact because it created a big problem between Louie, Boomer, and the coach Lednecky and I hope their will be a big change between those three as I keep on reading.
ReplyDeleteI am reading the book Running Loose and the part of the book that got me hooked was the game when Boomer injured Washington. This part of the book had crazy events and made me want to keep reading it. The reactions were what made this such an interesting part. Louie was heated and was making sure to let everyone know how he felt. I feel like he overreacted to the situation and could have handled it better. I feel like him quitting because of this was a little dramatic but that is what made it a good part. I am excited to read the rest and see where everything goes.
ReplyDeleteHi Dylan, I also couldn’t put my book down when I got to this part. I agree with you in the sense that he was overreacting when he completely quit but I’m glad he voiced what he believed in.
Deletei agree, that football game against Salmon River was in my opinion, the hooking point of the book. if this game had a different ending, The book would be completely different.
DeleteI as well and I think Louie's reaction to the play made everyone wonder what was going to happen next, maybe he would stay out or maybe quit but at that point I was so intrigued that I didn't want to put the book down.
DeleteI also agree that Louie overreacted when he quit because he was such a good player and he gave it all up for one incident. However, I don't think him yelling and trying to tell everyone it was a set up was overreacting because he was trying to prove his point and stand up for the kid.
DeleteThe point in my book where I realized I didn’t not want to put my book down was when the coach told the team to go after one player just because he had a wide skill set! I was so interested on what was going to happen next and I didn’t want to put it down.
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way Maci, I think when that happened I was shocked but also interested in what will happen during the game. This was for sure one of the moments I started to enjoy the book and wanting to read more.
DeleteHi Maci, I completely agree with you this part of the book was very interesting and a lot of fun to read about
DeleteHi Maci,
DeleteI agree with you also because injuring an opposing team's player on purpose is not right. this made me want to keep reading and foreshadowed what was going on during the next game.
Hi Maci, I also agree with you that this was a very interesting part. In this part in the book there was so much happening with Boomer taking the kid out, Louie yelling and getting upset, and everyone getting mad at Louie. At this part I just wanted to keep reading.
Deletethe moment i got hooked onto my book is when I found out jen was being raped. I got hooked when i found this out because jen was the only one that knew and I was waiting for her to tell someone and she finally told dillion. I feel like ever seems that part in the book I have been hooked.
ReplyDeleteI also didn't want to put the book down when Jen was telling Dillon about being raped. I was happy that she finally told someone but upset that she didn't want Dillon to do anything about it.
DeleteI am reading Chinese Handcuffs and the point I got hooked in the book was when reading about Preston's suicide. Although it was sad I didn't want to put the book down. It made me want to read more and find out more about his life. I want to know more about what Dillon and Preston's parents are like and his relationship with Stacy.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this was a very interesting to learn how Preston killed himself. Also to understand why Dillion is still so attached to Preston and why he still writes to him.
DeleteHey Abbie I am reading Staying fat for Sarah Brynes and it also deals with the topic of suicide. I wonder if Chris Crutcher had an experience with this in real life. When they told us about the suicide in the book it also peaked my interest.
DeleteI agree the book was one of the hardest books I have had to read but I felt the need to keep reading to find out what happens next.
DeleteI agree. The book was a little confusing during this part though and I understood it after rereading.
DeleteI only got hooked around the middle of the book. I'm getting a grasp on the past. I'm not gonna lie, I am forcing myself to read this book. I straight up can't read it on my own time. It's too confusing.
ReplyDeleteThe moment I hooked in Staying Fat for Sarah Byres was when Sarah starts talking about her real struggles and the scars that are on her face, I am pretty sure for every reader who is reading this book would be the moment too when she starts talking again to Eric, she puts lots of faith and trust on him to share her struggle with her father. she describes about the night that happened to Eric. Yes I am so eager to read more about how will Eric react to this and who he will share if he wants to.
ReplyDeleteI think that this sounds like a very interesting point in your book. Although I am not reading this book I could understand why this would be the moment you got hooked and didn't want to stop reading.
DeleteHello Jaksh, I'm reading Running Loose. It sounds like when you are talking about Sarah opening up to Eric and her sharing everything to him, is me thinking that Sarah has a crush on Eric and if Eric would go out and tell people about what Sarah told him, I would say goodbye to Sarah, Eric.
DeleteIn the book I'm reading Chris Crutcher makes it suspenseful by not telling us what Stotan week is until around chapter 6. but once Stotan week started Is when I really got hooked with the book because I didn't expect that Stotan week was basically a type of boot camp for the guys to have these crazy swimming work-outs and to also bond as a team for a week during there Christmas vacation.
ReplyDeleteHay Liam
DeleteThat was another part in the book that was kind of suspenseful but irritating. At the start of the book they did not tell us what Stotan week was and that kind of bothered me but eventually they tell us.
Nate Donovan
When reading the book Sarah Byrnes, I got hooked on the book when Sarah may or may not be lying about how her face got burned. The author created drama between Sarah and Eric, because they were bffs and Sarah told Dale how she ended up burned but not her own bff. Eric is obviously hurt, and I am waiting to see how this pans out or her reasoning to why Sarah did not tell Eric. I will always remember how sad this book is, it talks about people not wanting to be friends with the "fat boy" or "the girl's face that's disformed because its scared". Sad that people won't be friends with the people who can not change, Eric later on looses weight but Sarah's face she cannot change. People are scared of her because she doesn't look "normal".
ReplyDeleteI understand that Sarah told Dale and not Eric because this was during the time that Eric was losing weight and hanging out with her less so she hung out with Dale and they are alike because they both have bad parents and no mom
DeleteI am reading the book Stotan and i think when ever i got hooked in the book would be when they were staying at lions and it was the last day of Stotan week and lion got up on his counter and tried to jump in the air and put his speedo on and try to stick the landing. but his foot got caught in the speedo and he fell on his shoulder, then he just got up yelled STOTAN and went to sleep.
ReplyDeleteHi cole, I also am reading Stotan week and I kind of agree with you. I think this sort of showed how wore out these guys are getting from Stotan week. But I also thought a major part was when Stotan week started!
DeleteI am reading Chinese Handcuffs and the part I got hooked was when Jennifer got a concussion. This was really interesting to me because I learned a lot more about Jennifer and how her life is at home. It got deep and I was to the point where I didn't want to stop reading and learn more about her past.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this, because I think the main focus of the book was more about getting to know the characters and what makes them do what they do.
DeleteI agree it was confusing to meet at first because of all the flashbacks but after I understood what was happening it was a really good part of the book.
DeleteI remember thinking that Jen's concussion wasn't going to be that big deal but it lead to so much more. We found out a lot more about Jen as a character just from the small plot bump of her getting a concussion.
DeleteReading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. The part that hooked me is when Jodie started talking about Mark being a bad person and going to see Eric. Its funny to see the self righteous guy get taught a lesson. Also the part that they tell us that Sarah was faking the whole paralyzed state thing.
ReplyDeleteHey Nick, this also was an interesting part of the book. I think this is also when the books plot took place and started to get interesting. I am glad you are enjoying the book!
DeleteI would have to agree with you Nick even though in the book there are so many ups and downs.
DeleteI am reading the book Stotan! by Chris Crutcher. I got hooked on the book when it was the middle of Stotan Week. Chris made the book interesting when he made the book talk about how the boys were sore and they didn't know what was going to happen the next day. The way he put the detail of how they were tired and how they still had 3-4 days ahead of them made me want to keep reading because I thought that one of them would quit by the end of the week. As the days went on throughout the week, I think Wednesday was their hardest day and the day they got their bodies adjusted to the hard work that was still ahead of them. I will always remember when Nortie told his friends about his brother and they were in shock. It was a big point in the book because Nortie seemed like a shy person but then he let all of that steam out.
ReplyDeleteI think the time i got hooked on chinese handcuffs is when jennifer gets her concussion and is in the hospital. It hooked me because I've dealt with some injuries throughout middle school and highschool that have been pretty significant. It really make me want to keep reading on to see how this injury would affect her and if she was able to bounce back or not.
ReplyDeleteIn the book Running Loose I was immediately hooked when Louie called out the Coach during the football game. This was so interesting because now Louie was going to quit and everything that he worked for that summer didn't mean anything. All he had was his parents, Carter, and Becky his girlfriend. When Becky dies in a car crash Louie doesn't know what to do and I'm interested to see where he is going to go from there and want to keep reading.
ReplyDeleteHello Sam, I'm also reading Running Loose and I enjoy the part you are talking about as well which I also wrote about in my blog response. I agree with you one hundred percent that When Louie called out Coach during the football game was a very interesting part in the book and how he had to sacrifice everything just to prove everything he did was for the right reason. I can't wait to see as well what else is in store for Louie from here.
DeleteI got hooked into this book when Louie flipped out on the football team for purposely hurting the other teams star player. This part of the book showed how good of a person and how he is not scared to stand up for what he believes is right. This book was very easy for me to get invested in because I love watching and playing sports so reading a sports book is very easy for me.
ReplyDeleteHi Max,
DeleteI agree with you the part when Louie flipped out during the game was a spot that gave me a "wow" moment. Never do you really see players go against their own coach. However standing up for what's right is the correct thing to do.
I am reading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes and the book is like a roller coaster and has so many ups and downs but the first thing that caught my eye was when Sarah and Eric became friends with Dale and then when Dale was helping Eric with Sarah. after that I lost interest but when Sarah's dad was chasing Eric with the knife and threw it and stuck it in his shoulder.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Chinese handcuffs. the part that made me interested in the book was mainly the characters. I have not read to many books about characters who are heavily invested into athletics, especially ones who have suffered through major trauma. You could tell Chris was really trying to emphasize the characters and their relationships instead of focusing on other things like settings. in general this book was hard to put down.
ReplyDeleteThe part that I got hooked on is when Norite got beat up this created an emotional connection to Nortie and made me feel bad for him this made me want to keep reading to see Nortie evolve and get to a better place and kind of overcome his dad in a way weather it is going to be his friends standing up for him or what but I just keep reading to see Nortie evolve
ReplyDeleteHay Trent
DeleteI think you and I are talking about the same part in our book. If it is the same part I would have to agree with you about feeling bad for Nortie and wanting to see him overcome it.
I started to kind of get hooked on the book stotan around pages 20 and 21. On these pages there was a kid named Nortie and he was going to the local grocery store one afternoon to pick up some things. While at the store a guy slid into Norties car which was actually his families car. When Nortie got back home his dad ran outside and stated beating the hell out of him. It says in the book "He jerked Nortie out of the car onto his hands and knees, then lifted him up and slapped the sides of his head, screaming at him. When Nortie put his hands up to protect his head, his dad gave him a hard shot to the solar plexus and dropped him." That is only alittle part of it. The worst part of it all was Norties mom watched the whole thing from the livingroom window and didnt do anything about it. I know this is not the right thing to do and a parent should never treat there kids this way but the only reason this part started to get me hooked was because I like fighting and that I think Norties parents have a screw loose in their heads.

Hey Nate,
DeleteI felt the same way, I hated to hear that Nortie was beat growing up but it was kind of the first major event we hear about it the story and Walker did a great job being able to explain in detail what he went through.
I'm reading Chinese Handcuffs and Chris hooked me right at the beginning. The book stated off with a letter from Dillon to his dead brother Preston who committed suicide. It leaves us with a lot of questions and suspense like why did Preston kill himself? It made me want to keep reading because I wanted to know what happened next. Something I will remember about this book is that it was one of the best books I have read in a while and was also hard to read with all of the crap that goes on in it.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The book starts off with a bang by starting off with the dark topic of Preston's suicide. I think this hooks most people and makes them want to keep reading.
DeleteThe point when I became hooked into the book Running Loose is when the plot twisted right at the Salmon River vs Trout football game. What Chris Crutcher did to hook me in this part of the book, is when Louie started to defend Washington the kid on the Salmon River football team from Boomer when he rammed the football into his stomach because, he is black and they are against black people but mainly the lead coach on the Trout football team is. But the main reason this part hooked me is because, at first this book was mainly a highschool boys senior year of highschool, but then suddenly switches to fighting for racism type of book which was a big plot twist from my point of view. But the one thing that I will always take from this book is to never give up for the right thing even when there is many people peer pressuring you on the wrong side when you stick to your own true values and goals, that the truth will always set you free.
ReplyDeleteThomas, What year is the book set in?
DeleteI am reading Stotan and I see that a lot of others who are reading the same book become hooked when Stotan week begins. I was hooked earlier on than Stotan Week when Walker started to depict Nortie's childhood. I was able to get a really clear visual of how he was treated and it helped me to understand why he is the way he is today. I wondered why he was more shy than the rest of the gang but now it makes sense because whenever he would voice is opinion at home it would usually result in a beating. Although it terrible what happened, this part really drew me in and made me keep reading further.
ReplyDeleteHi Eric, I am also reading Stotan and I couldn’t agree with you more. The book itself never really caught my eye until we started hearing about everybody’s backgrounds. When we heard about Norties it seemed I couldn’t put the book down after!
DeleteHi Eric, I am also reading Stotan and you are on the nail with that. When that happened i really started to care for the character alot more and care about the book more as a whole because i could feel like that is a real event in someones life.
DeleteThe moment I realize author chris had me hooked was hearing about everybody’s backgrounds. In the beginning I didn’t really understand the book but, I thought once I heard Norties story was when I realized I was hooked. After he told Walker about his brother I couldn’t stop reading. Another time I realized I was hacked was one Stotan week actually started. While reading it I felt like I was at hell week at volleyball!
ReplyDeleteHello.
ReplyDeleteI got hooked to by book chinese handcuffs when Dillion the main character started acting badass. When he knocked all of the bikers bikes over and told them that his dead brother was gonna haunt him, I was rooting for him all the way. I couldnt put my book down. I will always remember how messed up this book is.
The book i am reading is Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes and I am at the middle of the book. A turning point that really affected me was when Eric and Ellerby were talking to Dale in his garage. This was a truly interesting part for me because Dale is normally a quiet character and sits back and listens although he is a bully. Eric wants to figure out what exactly Dale meant when he talked about Sarah, and her burns. It then goes on to share how Sarah wants to kill herself and keep getting more intense. The author does a good job about how i never want to put the book down and i want to keep on reading it.
ReplyDeleteIn the book running loose i became hooked when they were talking about trying to injure washington. I didnt want to put the book down when they were playing against salmon river, I didnt know if they were actually gonna go through with the plan to injure washington. I will always remember when Louies dad took his side for when he flipped out on the field.
ReplyDeleteHi Ben,
DeleteThis sounds so interesting and I can't imagine how you could put the book down. I'm sure you wanted to just pick it up every second of the day and continue to read to figure out what happens. You explained this point in the book so well and I think I would be just as hooked if I were reading the book also.
I became hooked on my book when Louie got into that big fight with principal Mr. Jasper and coach Lednecky. I got hooked on it because coach Lednecky wouldn't admit he was telling the team to injure the other teams star player. This made Mr. Jasper believe him because he was a former coach and wanted to back him up. I only had about four days to finish the book and having this moment occur, made me not want to put the book down and see what happens next. This book is great for keeping the reader attached and want to keep reading.
ReplyDeleteI am reading the book Running Loose and the moment I was hooked was at the football game with Trout vs Salmon River because that is when Boomer really injured that Washington kid. Louie didn't think it would actually happen so when it did he started yelling and trying to get people to listen to him that it was a set up. A lot of people starting getting angry with him and telling him to shut up so that's when Louie was fed up and left. At this part I didn't want to set the book down because there was so much that was happening and I wanted to keep reading.
ReplyDeleteHi Erin,
DeleteEven though I did not read the same book as you, the way you described this point in the book seems like a very capturing moment where anyone would become immensely more interested in continuing the read. I'd have to agree that when there is a lot happening in one point of the book it's harder to put it down because you want to figure out what's really going on or what the outcome is.
During my process of reading Chinese Handcuffs, there was a lot of moments that made me not want to put the book down. One of the first times this happens is when Stacy is introduced for the first time. Stacy is never really that big of a character but her role in the book is so intense that it constantly makes you want to learn more about her and Preston's past. I just wanted to keep reading hoping i would find out more about her and the baby.
ReplyDeleteHi Laney,
DeleteI would have to agree with your character choice and i would say that correlates to a character in Stotan.
While reading Stotan a little through the middle of the book norite gets to become a really interesting character because you get to learn about his home life and backstory. We find out in a flashback that walker (main character) has gone over to norite house for thanksgiving and this is the first time going over to his house. And norite ended up getting beat up by his dad right in front of walker. When that happened i truly connected with norite.
ReplyDeleteThe point I realized that I was finally hooked on my book, Running Loose was right before the Salamon River game. When Coach Lednecky told the players to take Washington out on a cheap play and hurt him that drew me into the book big time. I think the reason it was so interesting to me was because it was not the right thing to do and I was wondering whether someone would be so harsh and actually do that to Washington. Once the hit happened a little part inside of me was actually sad for Washington even though it was just a book. Knowing that he got hurt and went through so much pain because of a coach's game plan was awful. To add onto that Louie’s tantrum made me even more mad as I did not know whether or not he was going to be kicked off the team. These two events are what has really kept me intrigued in the book. The thing that I will always remember about this book is that it was actually interesting. I cannot recall a time in school when I have had to read something and have actually enjoyed/been interested in the book. Usually reading is a chore for me but for Running Loose that is not the case!

I read the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. I think the point where I really became hooked on this book was when Sarah finally opened up about her scars. I think I was interested in this book the most because I understand what insecurities can do to someone and I admire her for being able to open up about them. This should have really been the point everyone gets hooked on the book.
